MoI: Unrelenting Efforts to Protect Community Members and Secure their Rights

While marking the International Human Rights day and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities

Under the patronage of Lt. General H.H Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, the Ministry of Interior hosted a ceremony to celebrate the International Human Rights day and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities. The ceremony, organized by the Human Rights Department, the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, was held in the Decision-making Support Center at the Police Departments Complex in Abu Dhabi, with the participation of all of the police general headquarters at the countrywide level.

In his speech at the ceremony, Lt. General Saif Abdullah Al Sha’far, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Interior, said: “Protecting humans and preserving their rights represent the fundamental basis of our work at the ministry. Marking the important International Human Rights Day and the International Day of Persons with Disabilities is testament to the significant strides made by the UAE in promoting the rights of all segments of society.”

Lt. General Al Sha’far noted that the UAE stands among the leading world countries and has earned top marks for its considerable efforts and hard work to guarantee human rights and to o provide all means of well-being and advancement for the betterment of the people. “This embodies the UAE’s firm belief that mankind is one of the most important pillars of progress and development, and the pillar of every action designed to preserve and develop national gains,” he continued.

Adding further, Lt. General Al Sha’far said: “The UAE has acceded to and ratified a number of bilateral, regional and international treaties, agreements and conventions on human rights; including the Convention on the Rights of the Child; the Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination, and Discrimination Against Women; and the Anti-Human Trafficking Law. It has also ratified the Convention on the Protection of the Rights of All Migrant Workers and the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. This reflects the UAE’s unrelenting commitment to respect the highest humanitarian standards that preserve human rights, and its commitment to preserve the rights of people with disabilities.”

He continued: “Legislations alone cannot effectively protect the rights of people with disabilities; they need to be complemented by the concerted efforts of society as a supporter to this precious category. We, in the UAE, embrace, understand and invest in the talents of people with disabilities. We also endeavor to enhance their abilities through the MoI’s Centers for Rehabilitation and Employment of people with disabilities. , based on international legislations, which organize and guarantee the rights of people with disabilities. Additionally, we work to improve the infrastructure to facilitate the life and business of people with special needs across the UAE.” Lt. General Al Sha’far noted that the Ministry of Interior spares no effort to maintain and protect all aspects of human rights and works to provide the fundamental components of a safe and secure society, where everyone can exercise their rights and duties.

“The Universal Declaration of Human Rights has become an ethical universal document, inspired by the international and national legislations applicable in world countries to establish key criteria of human rights, which require continuous efforts on the part of countries, peoples, and individuals to achieve the noble goals,” he concluded.

For his part, Mohamed Mohamed Fadel Al Hameli, Secretary-General of Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care, hailed the support of the wise leadership for people with special needs.

He said: “The keenness of the UAE to maintain the rights of people with special needs is an integral part of the intellectual approach, which champions the need to build the good Emirati Citizen. The UAE has promulgated numerous laws and legislations, notably the Federal Law No. 29 for 2006 concerning the rights of people with special needs. It has also enacted a number of legislations related to social welfare as set forth by the general political agenda of the UAE, with the aim of providing all components of happiness and satisfaction to citizens with special needs, which have reflected on their achievements in all fields.”

Colonel Mohammed Al Shehhi, Deputy Director of the Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Interior, said: “Since the inception of the UAE, the country has endeavored to promote the respect for and observance of human rights, as guaranteed in the Constitution and relevant domestic legislation. A key external objective involves joining international conventions that embody those rights, therefore we have become one of the countries to sign the International Convention on the Elimination of all Forms of Racial Discrimination of 1974 and accede to its provisions. The convention, through its various international and regional forums, calls to eradicate racial discrimination, and the right to live for all, without distinction as to race, sex, or color. The UAE continues to adopt this approach, thanks to the continued support of the higher leadership.”

Lt. Colonel Dr. Khaled Al Ameri, Director of the Ministry of Interior’s Centers for Rehabilitation and Employment of People with Special Needs, highlighted the efforts exerted to provide protection for mankind and the various segments of society. He pointed out that the Ministry employs 250 people with special needs, and has provided training for 680 individuals, out of whom 609 have successfully passed the training, which qualifies them to work anywhere. He also noted that the Ministry has organized three collective weddings that benefitted 51 people with special needs.

Iman Al Tamimi, Chief of the Education and Rehabilitation Section at the Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care, said that the organization runs 18 full-service centers, which provide unlimited support, care, rehabilitation, education, and training services for people with special needs as of the first month of life. She noted that the organization praises the role of the Ministry of Interior as a strategic partner in humanitarian work, which exerts significant efforts for the benefit of people with special needs; ultimately enhancing confidence in the role of this category to contribute with excellence to all areas of public work.

The ceremony began with a documentary about Zayed Higher Organization, which documented the early stages of the organization’s establishment, as well as the constant efforts to support and rehabilitate people with special needs and help to integrate them efficiently into professional and productive jobs, among their healthy peers. Following the documentary, members of the Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care presented a musical performance.

Lt. General Saif Abdullah Al Sha’far, Undersecretary at the Ministry of Interior, honored a number of participating authorities. He also inaugurated the accompanying exhibition, which included traditional and handmade crafts, as well as paintings, all made by the Zayed Higher Organization for Humanitarian Care members.

The ceremony was attended by Major General Mohammed bin Al Awadhi Al Menhali, Assistant Undersecretary of Resources and Support Services at the Ministry of Interior, Major General Ahmed Nasser Al Raisi, Inspector General of the Ministry of Interior, as well as general directors and department heads. Also attending was Mohammed Salim Al Ka’bi, Chairman of the Emirates Human Rights Association (EHRA), Maitha Al Shamesi, CEO, Human Rights Sector at the Community Development Authority (CDA) in Dubai, Maryam bin Theneya, Dubai Foundation For Women and Children (DFWAC)’s communication and IT director;, Amina Za’al Al Muhairi, Deputy Director of Human Rights Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs;, as well as a large number of officers, non-commission officers and constables.
