MoI Council in Al Ain Addresses School Violence

In line with the return of the school year

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, August 30th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

In an MoI council hosted by Bakhit Suwaidan Bakhit Al Nuaimi at his home in Al Ain, participating citizens recommended that the Community Police, Social Support Centers, and the Abu Dhabi Educational Council (ADEC) coordinate in response to the violence among school students. Additionally, the participants unanimously agreed on the need to activate the role of the parents through opening the channels of dialogue between the parents and the children in order to eliminate this phenomenon.

The participants of the council stressed that the responsibility to address school violence among students is not limited to a single entity; rather, it is a collective responsibility that starts with the family and reaches through educational institutions and the concerned governmental authorities. They concluded that awareness should be intensified for both students and their parents through coordinated and cohesive measures. The council, moderated by personality Abdullah Ismail from Dubai Media Incorporated, comes within the series of councils organized by the Law Respect Culture Bureau in cooperation with the Security Media Department at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior.

Within the discourse of the council, the participants discussed the impact violence has on children and what underlying reasons and circumstances may lead students towards adopting such negative behavior. The council additionally addressed the means of treatment and protection from school violence and how to identify problematic areas. They noted that school violence is not limited to physical abuse, as it may also lead to psychological damage – which has the capability of inflicting far more serious and lasting consequences for students.

The dialogue touched on the MoI’s efforts to address school violence and to provide comprehensive care through services provided by its affiliated departments, most notably in the field of child protection.

The participants also agreed that educational institutions are key pillars for teaching youth the fundamentals of good values, manners, and respect for others. The school environment is a fertile atmosphere to nurture and build-up impressionable generations and to reduce school violence through the promotion of cultural awareness. It was noted that the student’s main environment was that of the family, and it should be free from all forms of physical and psychological violence. Participants stated that they believe that these steps can be achieved by strengthening the communication between the family and the school, and through strengthening a culture of dialogue between parents and children.

Upon conclusion of the council, Bakhit Suwaidan Al Nuaimi expressed his utmost appreciation and gratitude to the MoI for their initiative to organize the awareness councils that discuss various issues concerning the citizens and the future of their children in a friendly environment. Through this, he said that the relationships and communal bonds are strengthened, and the access to the recommendations contributes to addressing the matters at hand and promoting the efforts of official and public bodies.

Aligned Data Centers Introduces the First Pay-for-Use Data Center

Consumption-based pricing model helps its clients cut colocation costs

NEW YORK. - Wednesday, August 26th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Aligned Data Centers announced today that it will offer consumption-based pricing to enterprises, service providers and governments who require greater control of data center cost and faster time-to-market.

Most data centers are built to support static power requirements and fixed densities. Forecasting future IT demand is difficult and results in stranded power and space. Data center customers are forced to commit to long-term contracts for power they may never use, which limits their ability to control the capacity they need to meet the needs of their business. Companies are demanding more flexibility and speed in how they deploy and scale their data centers.

“The current approach to the data center needs to evolve to keep pace with changing IT needs”, said Jakob Carnemark, CEO for Aligned Data Centers. “Today, the cloud makes it possible to access compute and storage on-demand, scale quickly, and only pay for what you use. We are delivering the same approach to the data center and are able to help our clients cut their colocation contract commitments by up to 75%.”

Aligned Data Centers’ consumption-based pricing eliminates the risk in forecasting future IT demand and provides the flexibility and speed companies require to adjust data center capacity as their business needs change.

According to Gartner analyst Bob Gill, “a more transparent and usage-based model is sorely needed.”

Aligned Data Centers was formed by a group of industry veterans with more than 25 years of experience designing, engineering, building, and operating production data centers for some of the largest and most innovative Internet, telecommunications, and financial services organizations.

“We don’t believe in a tradeoff between reliability and cost,” said Paul Fox, former Executive Director IT Infrastructure at Morgan Stanley and current Director of Operations for Aligned Data Centers. “We are delivering enterprise grade data centers in a cost model that customers have been demanding for years.”

Construction is nearing completion on the company’s Plano, Texas data center. When finished, the 30 megawatt data center will enable Aligned Data Centers’ clients to deploy multiple power densities within the same row and scale from 1-25kW per rack. In addition, this multi-tenant data center will feature the latest in energy efficient infrastructure, which uses 85% less water than traditional air-cooled systems and allows Aligned Data Centers to guarantee its clients an industry leading Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.15. “We are excited to offer our clients the flexibility and efficiency they need to run the next-generation of IT,” said Fox.

In addition to the Plano data center, the company has also started construction of a massive 550,000 square foot, 65 megawatt data center in Phoenix, Arizona.

“We have seen a tremendous amount of interest in our pay-for-use approach and are in advanced discussions with a number of large clients at both locations,” said Ron Kolber, Executive Vice President of Sales for Aligned Data Centers.

Aligned Data Centers is backed by New York based BlueMountain Capital Management. The company will be expanding its North American footprint to four other markets including California, Illinois, Virginia, and New Jersey.

About Aligned Data Centers Aligned Data Centers, a division of Aligned Energy, is the first pay-for-use data center provider to offer consumption-based pricing for on-demand data center capacity to enterprises, service providers, and governments who require greater control of data center cost and faster time-to-market.

Aligned Data Centers’ evolved approach eliminates the need to forecast future IT demand and provides control over power and space consumption independently, so its clients waste less and can better align the data center to the needs of their business.

Coca-Cola on Track to Meet 100% Water Replenishment Goal

Company and its Bottling Partners Replenished an Estimated 94% of 2014 Sales Volume; Working To Be The First Food and Beverage Company To Replenish All The Water It Uses

STOCKHOLM - Wednesday, August 26th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The Coca-Cola Company and its global bottling partners (the Coca-Cola system) today announced they are on track to meet their 2020 water replenishment goal by the end of 2015. Based on the Coca-Cola system’s global water replenishment projects to date, the system is balancing the equivalent of an estimated 94 percent of the water used in its finished beverages based on 2014 sales volume. Since 2004, Coca-Cola has replenished an estimated 153.6 billion liters of water back to communities and nature through 209 community water projects in 61 countries. The Coca-Cola system returned approximately 126.7 billion liters of water used in its manufacturing processes back to communities and nature through treated wastewater in 2014. These combined efforts put Coca-Cola on track to be the first global food and beverage company to replenish all the water it uses back to communities and nature.

“There is no resource more precious to human life and the health of our global ecosystems and economies than water. As a consumer of water, the Coca-Cola system has a special responsibility to protect this shared resource. This is why we set an aspirational goal of being water neutral by 2020,” said Muhtar Kent, Chairman and CEO, The Coca-Cola Company. “While we have made significant progress toward making that goal a reality, we are more intent than ever to give back the equivalent of all the water that we use to communities and nature. And we will continue to do so after we meet the 100 percent goal.”

Coca-Cola is able to give back the amount of water equivalent to what it uses in its finished beverages and their production through replenishment projects, increasing water use efficiency in its plants, and returning water to watersheds and municipalities through wastewater treatment. Part of meeting its replenishment goal is engaging in diverse, locally focused community water projects. Each project works toward set objectives such as providing or improving access to safe water and sanitation, protecting watersheds, supporting water conservation and raising awareness on critical local water issues.

Once projects are established, the Company and its bottling partners work to ensure those projects remain sustainable within communities over time and continue to replenish water. These efforts, as well as new projects, frequently address local source water vulnerabilities and balance additional sales volume as Coca-Cola’s business continues to grow each year.

“More and more companies now recognize that factoring nature into their decision-making is a smart business strategy. Coca-Cola’s commitment to water underscores that investing in nature can produce very positive returns for businesses and local communities,” said Mark Tercek, President and Chief Executive Officer, The Nature Conservancy (TNC). “TNC is proud of its collaboration with Coca-Cola and congratulates the company and its bottling partners on a very significant achievement.”

TNC was an instrumental partner in designing the methodology to quantify Coca-Cola’s water replenishment efforts to balance the water used in finished beverages. The methodology for calculating water replenishment benefits also was the subject of scientific technical peer review to verify the use of generally accepted methods and accuracy for the foregoing purpose. Projects are reviewed annually and evaluated using this methodology. An overview of each project and their respective replenishment value is included in the Company’s 2015 replenishment verification report prepared by LimnoTech and verified by Deloitte.

Two major contributors to Coca-Cola’s water replenishment activities are The Coca-Cola Africa Foundation’s Replenish Africa Initiative (RAIN) and the Company’s Every Drop Matters partnership with United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). Through RAIN, Coca-Cola partners with Global Environment & Technology Foundation (GETF), United States Agency for International Development (USAID), Water and Sanitation for the Urban Poor (WSUP), Millennium Challenge Corporation, WaterAid, Water for People, and other organizations and local governments to bring safe drinking water to an estimated 6 million Africans by 2020.

Through Every Drop Matters, Coca-Cola and UNDP have worked together to improve safe water access for more than an estimated 1 million people in Eastern Europe and the Middle East with projects focused on watershed restoration, sustainable agriculture, infrastructure improvements and advocating for needed water policy. Learn more about Coca-Cola system water partnerships here.

In 2007, The Coca-Cola Company and its bottling partners set an aspirational goal to safely return to communities and nature an amount of water equivalent to what is used in its beverages and their production by 2020. The water footprint of growing agricultural ingredients sourced by the Coca-Cola system is not included in this goal. However, sustainable water practices are part of Coca-Cola’s Sustainable Agriculture Guiding Principlesrequired for suppliers. The replenish projects are the result of partnerships with governments, civil society and other members of the private sector. Coca-Cola only calculates replenishment credit for the portions of the project that are directly funded or instituted by the Coca-Cola system.

Nordson EFD Introduces the Latest Innovations in Jet Dispensing Technology

The PICO Pµlse non-contact jet valve and PICO Toµch controller with intuitive touch screen interface offer greater dispensing capabilities for superior process control

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I - Tuesday, August 25th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nordson EFD, a Nordson company (NASDAQ: NDSN), the world’s leading precision fluid dispensing systems manufacturer, introduces innovative piezoelectric jetting technology that removes the barrier between speed and accuracy. EFD’s new PICO® Pµlse™ valve and PICO Toµch™ controller make it possible to dispense very exact, repeatable micro-deposits as small as 0.5 nL at up to 500Hz continuous, with 1500Hz maximum bursts – an industry best.

The PICO Pµlse non-contact jet valve’s modular design makes it possible to jet low- to high-viscosity fluids onto any surface, including uneven and tough-to-reach substrates. Exchangeable parts provide versatility, making the valve adaptable to a wider range of applications, so it can meet changing production demands. Its innovative tool-free latch mechanism allows for easy removal of the fluid body for faster serviceability and maintenance – reducing downtime and increasing productivity. Variable stroke, improved close time, and faster full stroke open time makes Pµlse one of the most robust jet dispensing valves on the market.

The PICO Toµch controller features an easy-to-use intuitive touch screen interface for precise control of the PICO Pµlse valve. Users can set extremely precise operating parameters, such as ramp open and close and stroke control, to fine-tune dispensing performance. Pulse time can be adjusted in increments as small as .01 ms. Better slope control delivers more repeatable deposits while preventing turbulence and air bubbles from entering the fluid – preventing deposit variation.

“The PICO Toµch controller’s intuitive touch screen interface allows precise programming of the PICO Pµlse valve setup parameters to give customers a vastly improved jetting solution,” said Claude Bergeron, global product manager, Nordson EFD. “As a leader in innovative jet dispensing systems, EFD is dedicated to working closely with manufacturers to provide the best process control possible.”

“Our goal is to provide equipment that dispenses the most accurate deposits at faster cycle rates, with less fluid waste and easier maintenance, to increase bottom-line profitability and help our customers stay ahead of changing market demands,” Bergeron said. “Our new PICO line does exactly that and more.”

Global sustainable development leaders confirmed to speak at Eye on Earth Summit 2015

Summit agenda highlights crucial role of data in securing the future of the planet

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, August 25th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

Some of the world’s most respected leaders in sustainable development are confirmed to speak at the second Eye on Earth Summit, taking place from 6 to 8 October in Abu Dhabi. Held under the patronage of The President HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Summit will explore the critical need for better access to and sharing of environmental, social and economic data to support informed decision-making for sustainable development.

With the post-2015 development agenda firmly positioning sustainability at the fore of global priorities this year and beyond, Eye on Earth Summit 2015 will cast a spotlight on the role governments, technology, the scientific community and citizen participation play in enhancing access to quality data about the state of the world’s resource    s. Close to 30 sessions will be delivered by more than 100 speakers across the three-day Summit. Speakers will explore the supply and demand dynamics, enabling conditions, and crucial role of data and information in creating a healthier planet.

2015 will mark a turning point for sustainable development, poverty eradication and the protection of the planet with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and a new global climate change agreement likely to be enacted by the end of the year.

“The events of 2015 make the work of Eye on Earth more important than ever as we come together – governments, the private sector, academia and civil society – to improve information availability and quality to safeguard the future of the planet and humanity. At Summit 2015 we hope to agree the roadmap that will get us there,” said HE Razan Khalifa Al Mubarak, Secretary General Environment Agency – Abu Dhabi, a founding Eye on Earth Alliance Partner.

The Eye on Earth Summit will open with a focus on policy maker demand for environmental-related data and the associated challenges in using it to make evidence-based decisions. Led by Achim Steiner, Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and Undersecretary General of the UN, issues such as inconsistent data sharing mechanisms across countries and regions, institutional attitudes to open-source data policies and responding to commercial imperatives from the private sector, are some of the topics that will be discussed. The need for data to address the Syrian refugee crisis will be another critical agenda item.

Felix Dodds, Senior Fellow at the Global Research Institute of the University of North Carolina and an Associate Fellow at the Tellus Institute; Jonathan Kent Deal, CEO of Treasure Karoo Action Group (TKAG) and winner of the Goldman Environmental Prize, considered the green equivalent of the Nobel prize; and Dr. Fernando R. Echavarria from the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Oceans, Environment and Science (OES), will be among the esteemed guest speakers discussing these issues.

Barbara Ryan, Secretariat Director of the Group on Earth Observations will open day two of the Summit, looking at the problems impeding the availability of and access to environmental-related data. She will be joined by  Muki Haklay, Professor of Geographic Information Science at University College London (UCL) and director of its Extreme Citizen Science group; Louis Liebenberg, Executive Director of CyberTracker Conservation NPC and an Associate of Human Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University; and Ed Parsons, the Geospatial Technologist of Google responsible for evangelising Google’s mission to organise the world’s information using geography.

Looking in detail at the logarithmic data explosion, both in terms of volume and sources, day two of the Summit will explore the undiscovered potential of new resources, such as crowd sourcing, citizen science and cutting-edge technologies to engage many more actors in the world’s transition to a sustainable future.

The Summit will conclude on day three with a focus on the necessary conditions to support effective synergies between data users and data providers. Policy arenas, funding commitments and capacity building are some of the topics that will be discussed. Inger Anderson, Director General of IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature) will deliver day three’s opening address. She will be joined by as well as Enrico Giovannini, the distinguished Italian economist and statistician.

“The Eye on Earth network is just getting started, but it could substantially alter the course of sustainable development for generations to come. Its potential impact has been likened to the equivalent of the Human Genome Revolution. That’s how important and valuable environmental-related data could become. The cooperation between stakeholders in government, academic, civil society and the private sector remains the most important element in Eye on Earth’s success. Everyone can, and should, lend their support to this endeavour,” said UN Under-Secretary-General and UNEP Executive Director Achim Steiner.

On a macro level, a successful Eye on Earth Summit and growing international movement could mean the slowing down of natural resource depletion and an increased adoption of greener economies. It could ensure responsible urban policies and education for the improved management of urban growth, as well as the advancement of knowledge and innovation to guide all countries towards a promising and sustainable future. On a micro level, it is hoped the Summit will provide the tools and opportunities necessary for stakeholders to foster partnerships to support informed decision-making and continue collaborating long after the Summit. Increased funding will also allow community-run Special Initiative programmes to assist in the achievement of SDGs and other global environmental goals.

“We have a shared responsibility, globally, to address the topic of sustainability in the face of continuing population growth. By understanding how we access, use and support environmental-related data, we will strengthen our capabilities to develop environmental policies and regulations, ensure appropriate enforcement and enhance sustainable development,” said Mr. Steiner.

Live social media feeds will allow the wider global community to tune in to the Summit and initiate dialogue with attendees. The full Summit agenda and list of speakers can be found at www.eoesummit.org.
