Huawei Unveils $430 Million Investment to Boost Digital Africa


 SHANGHAI 

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- The eighth edition of Huawei Connect has opened its doors in Shanghai from September 20 to 22, marking its first event since the global health crisis. This year’s spotlight is on artificial intelligence (AI), reflecting Huawei’s key focus for the African continent. During the Huawei Northern Africa Night event on September 20, Terry HE, President of Huawei Northern Africa (North, West & Central Africa), revealed the company’s renewed strategy to guide Africa towards a "smart and connected future."


This strategy, entitled "Accelerate Intelligence for New Africa", is not just a mere roadmap, but a comprehensive blueprint for Africa's digital and technological future. Given the continent’s young population, with 60% aged 25 or younger, digitalization is emerging as a major catalyst for growth in African nations. Additionally, the continent’s considerable potential in green energy offers an unparalleled competitive advantage in the AI era. Recognizing these strengths, Huawei's new strategy is built around the integration of smart technologies, particularly AI, into vital sectors that shape and influence the daily lives of Africans, including health, education, transportation, finance, agriculture, and mining.


The strategy is structured around three core action areas:


Accelerate intelligence to enhance inclusion, thereby improving people's lives by expanding the coverage and quality of essential services;

Accelerate intelligence to enhance governmental management and bolster the attractiveness of the business and commercial environment;

Accelerate intelligence to heighten operational efficiency and productivity across the economy, particularly in Africa's key industries.

To support this strategy, during the event, Terry HE unveiled a significant investment plan named "Intelligent Future" for the Northern Africa region, encompassing the 28 countries located to the north of the equator within the African continent.


This grand five-year investment initiative, totaling $430 million, is allocated as follows: $200 million to establish the region's first public cloud center, offering over 200 cloud services, and an additional $200 million to support 200 local software partners and empower 1,300 channel partners. In term of talent development, Huawei will invest $30 million to train 10,000 local developers and educate 100,000 digital professionals, creating a skilled workforce to drive intelligent transformation in the region.

Commercial synergies resulting from direct access to AGCO’s global OEM, aftermarket, other OEM, and retrofit channels, in addition to modest run-rate cost synergies are expected to approximately double the JV’s EBITDA by year 5 post closing.

The $2.0 billion purchase price for AGCO’s 85% ownership in the Trimble Ag business represents an implied enterprise value of approximately $2.35 billion and implies a transaction multiple of approximately 13.8x based on 2023E EBITDA of approximately $170 million. Inclusive of estimated revenue and run-rate cost synergies of $100 million by year 3 and the net present value of tax attributes in excess of $50 million, the synergized multiple is approximately 8.5x on a 2023E basis.


The transaction is not subject to a financing condition. AGCO has secured $2.0 billion in fully committed bridge financing from Morgan Stanley Senior Funding, Inc. The purchase price of $2.0 billion is expected to be funded by a combination of existing liquidity, free cash flow generation and new debt. AGCO remains committed to maintaining its solid investment grade credit rating.


Closing is expected in the first half of 2024, subject to the satisfaction of regulatory approval and customary closing conditions.


AGCO has also announced that the Grain & Protein business will be placed under strategic review as part of AGCO’s broader portfolio transformation. Under this review, AGCO will assess all strategic options to ensure the Grain & Protein customers are serviced in the best way possible, and that the business is best positioned to maximize its full potential.

With over 2,360 rivers, Vietnam has abundant supplies of natural water resources, however, the country faces severe water shortages. Although the country has made rapid progress in improving water supplies over the past few decades, in the country’s remote areas – where two-thirds of the population reside – it is reported that less than 50% of households have access to safe water and sanitation. Providing a simple water purification system that can clean the water from its rivers and wells would significantly bolster the nation’s water security and also improve key health outcomes.

Eight water purification systems developed by Safe Water Cube, a global nonprofit organisation and a Zayed Sustainability Prize 2019 finalist under the Water category, are now being used to provide clean water to five villages and three schools in the Quảng Nam province of Vietnam.

The Safe Water Cube fountains are developed by the France-based Agir Ensemble Association, whose mission is to raise private and public funds to install Safe Water Cube fountains in countries where access to drinking water is a real health issue. Powered by a hand pump, the fountain filters microbes, viruses and other impurities from the water through various filters without the use of harmful chemicals or an electrical power source. One Safe Water Cube fountain can supply 1,000 litres of clean water per hour and provide clean water to a village of up to 1,000 people.

In addition to providing safe drinking water to the people of Quảng Nam province, Safe Water Cube has trained 26 people, including 14 men and 8 women, in the use, upkeep and maintenance of the fountain.

Five villages and three schools were selected to receive the Safe Water Cubes. These include A Bat Village, Chaval Commune, Nam Giang District; Pa Dau Village, Thanh My City, Nam Giang District; Tan Doi Village, Dai Son Commune, Dai Loc District; Lap Thuan Village, Dai Hong Commune, Dai Loc District; and Ngoc Son Tay Village, Binh Phuc Commune, Thang Binh District; and three schools in the villages of Nha tho Hoang Phuoc, Dai Hong, and Dai Loc.

The deployment in Vietnam marks the third time Safe Water Cube has been installed in remote, underserved communities through the Beyond2020 initiative by providing access to clean water in Madagascar for 8,500 people and in Cambodia for 4,400 people.

Beyond2020 brings together a leading number of partners which include Abu Dhabi Fund for Development, BNP Paribas, Mubadala Energy and Masdar.

Since its inception, a total of 16 deployments have been rolled out, including energy, health, water and food-related solutions, transforming the lives of over 211,800 people in the sixteen different countries across Africa, South America, Middle East and Asia.  Another four countries have been identified as deployment grounds for new projects.

DOW is a polymer-based air-cladded waveguide technology that is particularly useful for optical interconnects in the data center and high-performance computing environments.


DOW connects the active photonic devices such as laser diodes or photodiodes directly to the optical fiber, providing high-density and high-speed optical signal connectivity between switches, servers, and other devices within the data center or HPC clusters. Through this announcement, the company aims to provide clarity and mutual understanding among international telecom operators regarding the services offered by OREX, thereby facilitating its further expansion.


OREX is DOCOMO’s Open RAN service brand, developed in collaboration with multiple global vendors. It can be customized to address the unique challenges of each customer. The introduction of OREX Open RAN services is expected to reduce clients’ total cost of ownership by up to 30% when the costs of initial setup and ongoing maintenance are taken into account. It can also reduce the time required for network design by up to 50%. Additionally, OREX reduces power consumption at base stations by up to 50%.

(BUSINESS WIRE)--Stationary battery manufacturer Hithium’s production facility at its headquarters in Xiamen, China, has received the globally recognized carbon neutrality certification PAS 2060 (Certificate number: 0412TZH01106). This certification standard builds on established methodologies, according to TÜV Süd, to calculate the plant’s carbon footprint (such as the GHG-Protocol and ISO 14064) and it assesses, where needed, the impact of high-quality offsetting certificates from climate projects (including CDM, JI, GS, and VCS).


The company aims for the factory to serve as an energy storage industry benchmark, raising the standard for sustainable production as one of the earliest battery production sites in China to receive this certification.
