SAN FRANCISCO - Wednesday, September 30th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Today in San Francisco, Huawei and Google introduced the Nexus 6P, an innovative smartphone featuring Android 6.0 Marshmallow, Google’s newest operating system for mobile devices.

“Huawei is very excited to collaborate with Google and deliver a premium Nexus experience for the global market,” said Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group. “We value the way consumers embrace mobile technology in all parts of their lives and have created a smartphone with great design, performance and seamless integration of Android 6.0 Marshmallow, the latest Android release.”

“We're excited to partner with Huawei to introduce customers to Nexus 6P, our most premium phone yet, and Android 6.0, Marshmallow, our most polished and highest-performing OS ever," said Hiroshi Lockheimer, VP Android, Chromecast and Chrome OS at Google.

Elegantly Designed The Nexus 6P is beautifully designed with an elegant all-metal unibody. Crafted from aeronautical-grade anodized aluminum with diamond chamfers encircling its edges, the sculpted back of the phone accents the low-light-loving, fast-movement-capturing camera.

Pure Android With the Nexus 6P, Huawei and Google have introduced a truly premium device that is 100 percent Android, integrating the newest OS, Android 6.0 Marshmallow.

INNOVATIVE TECHNOLOGY - Built on a foundation of power Nexus 6P features a 5.7” WQHD 518ppi AMOLED display perfect for playing games, watching movies and getting work done in stunning clarity, and front-facing stereo speakers for crisp, clear sound. With the latest version of the octa-core Qualcomm® Snapdragon™ 810 v2.1 processor under the hood, Nexus 6P delivers great performance, and the 3450mAh battery keeps you talking and texting from day to night.* With the reversible USB Type-C port, there's no more guessing which way is up.* The included Type-C fast charger gives up to seven hours of battery life from a 10-minute charge.

* All battery life claims are approximate and based on an average mixed use profile that includes both usage and standby time. Actual battery performance will vary and depends on many factors including signal strength, network configuration, age of battery, operating temperature, features selected, device settings, and voice, data, and other application usage patterns.

CAMERA - A powerful camera that captures more light Nexus 6P has the best all-around camera. The Nexus camera is great for outdoor photography, but where it really shines is in conditions with less-than-ideal lighting. The larger 1.55um pixels capture more light even in the dimmest conditions to produce stunning details and sharp images. Nexus 6P is also capable of recording 4K and high-frame-rate slow-motion videos. With a faster Google Camera app, you never miss a moment, and with the smart Google Photos app, your memories are easy to relive and always at your fingertips. Pakistani Avenges Brother’s Murder after Six Years

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Sunday, September 27th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The Abu Dhabi Police (ADP) has arrested a Pakistani truck driver who is suspected of killing an investor of the same nationality in an act of revenge.  The suspect, whose brother was killed six years ago in Pakistan, alleged that the victim had hired someone to kill his brother following a dispute over a plot of land.

The details of the incident as narrated by Brigadier Dr. Rashid Mohammad Borshid, Head of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Abu Dhabi Police GHQ, date back to earlier this month when the Operations Room received a report regarding a burning vehicle in Bani Yas. Firefighting teams, ambulances, and police patrols were immediately dispatched to the scene, as the report also stated that a man near the vehicle was also on fire.

Initial investigations revealed that a sedan was completely burned except for its trunk, and a man had been found lying on the roadside a few meters away from the vehicle with burns that covered his entire body.

“Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire, and our preliminary investigations indicated foul play,” he said. “Forensic reports later confirmed our initial suspicions.”

“The officers of the Abu Dhabi Police suspected that the incident was no accident,” said Lt. Colonel Juma'a Al Ka’bi, Chief of Psychological Crimes Section at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID). “Although he tried to destroy all of the evidence, the officers could tell that the incident was a deliberate one,” he said as he mentioned that the suspect had also gone into hiding.

Also according to Lt. Colonel Al Ka’abi, the suspect (M.K, 38) was brought before the police and admitted to killing the victim (M.Sh, 67) in revenge for his brother’s death in Pakistan. “He admitted that the victim was from his village and tribe, and that he would deliberately accompany the victim as he waited for an opportunity to kill him.”

Lt. Colonel Al Ka’bi said that the suspect admitted to running over the victim when he had been trying to fix the front grille of his vehicle on the side of the road. The murder suspect also admitted to repeatedly running over the victim before dousing him and his vehicle in gasoline, and fled after lighting the fire.

DIABETES AND YOUR EYES

Untreated diabetes can lead to complete vision loss

Dubai, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, September 29th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which the body does not produce or properly use insulin, a hormone that allows the body to use blood sugar for energy. It is characterized by high levels of blood sugar, which can cause changes in the blood vessels of the retina, the light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye that is necessary for good vision.

“DIABETIC RETINOPATHY is the leading cause of new blindness cases among adults aged 20-74” states Prof. Dr. Ayman Shouman, Cataract and Vitreoretinal surgery consultant at Spanish Center Dubai, highlights the danger of Diabetes in harming your vision.

In the early stages of diabetic retinopathy, small blood vessels in the eye swell. As the disease progresses, some vessels that nourish the retina become blocked. Abnormal new blood vessels may begin to grow on the surface of the retina to replace the blocked vessels. The new vessels, however, have thin, fragile walls. If they leak blood, severe vision loss and even blindness can result.

The only way that diabetic retinopathy can be diagnosed is through a comprehensive eye exam. Diabetics are sometimes first diagnosed in an optometrist’s clinic when diabetic retinopathy is discovered.

All people with diabetes, including those with Type I (juvenile onset) and Type II (adult onset), are at risk of developing diabetic retinopathy. The longer you have diabetes, the more likely you are to develop it. There is a genetic component to this disease, as well. If your grandmother had diabetic retinopathy, for example, your risk is higher.

In order to prevent vision loss, early diagnosis and aggressive treatment of diabetic retinopathy are essential. The risk of blindness can be reduced by 90% with timely treatment and follow- up care. Vision that has already been lost, however, cannot be restored.

During the early stages of the disease, no treatment is needed. As the disease advances, doctors at Spanish Center Dubai recommend the following treatment options:

Laser surgery. Laser surgery has been successful in sealing blood vessels to stop them from leaking, and in shrinking abnormal vessels. Generally, laser surgery is used to stabilize vision, not necessarily to improve it. Al received treatment early enough that only minimal vision loss had occurred.

Intraocular injection. This new treatment helps reduce the amount of fluid leaking into the retina, which improves vision. It may need to be repeated or combined with laser therapy to achieve a lasting effect.

Osaka Gas to Establish Energy Service Joint Venture in Thailand with PTT

OSAKA, Japan - Tuesday, September 29th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Osaka Gas (Thailand) Co., Ltd. (Managing Director: Toshihiro Ouchi; "OGT"), a subsidiary of Osaka Gas Co., Ltd. (President: Takehiro Honjo; "Osaka Gas"), will establish OGP Energy Solutions Co., Ltd. ("OGPS"), a company that will provide fuel conversion energy services to industrial customers in Thailand, through a joint investment with PTT Retail Business Co., Ltd. (Director: Chakkrit Charuchinda, "PTTRB"), a subsidiary of PTT Public Company Limited (CEO: Tevin Vongvanich; "PTT").

In its mid-term business plan, "Catalyze Our Dreams," the Osaka Gas Group aims to expand its downstream business outside Japan. This has already resulted in gas sales business in Singapore through City-OG Gas Energy Services Pte. Ltd., energy service business in Thailand through OGT and cogeneration/on-site business in Thailand through NS-OG Energy Solutions (Thailand) Ltd., a company jointly invested with Nippon Steel & Sumikin Engineering Co., Ltd.

Prior to establishment of this joint venture, our energy service business in Thailand focused primarily on Japanese companies. However, OGPS will be able to target both non-Japanese and Japanese companies in Thailand to expand energy service business by leveraging engineering strengths of Osaka Gas Group and the credibility and brand familiarity of PTT, Thailand's largest corporate group operating energy businesses ranging from importing to retailing of natural gas.

Based on an MOU concluded with PTT on information exchange and joint study regarding liquefied natural gas (LNG) as well as natural gas supply, Osaka Gas Group has for some years been stepping up cooperation with the PTT Group through operational and technical support for PTT’s LNG receiving terminal. The establishment of OGPS will serve as an opportunity to explore the possibilities of further expansion of the joint energy business between PTT and OGT in Thailand and development of a broader range of business activities outside the country.

1. Business Overview OGPS will provide a one-stop service in Thailand covering natural gas supply, facility design, equipment leasing and maintenance, all of which are required for fuel conversion to natural gas. In exchange for such services, the company will receive energy service fees from customers.

11 Dead and 84 Injured from Traffic Accidents in the UAE during Eid Holiday

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Monday, September 28th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

According the to the nationwide statistics released by the Traffic Coordination Directorate General at the Ministry of Interior,  11 people have died and 84 people have been hurt, with injuries ranging from mild to severe, as a result of traffic accidents during the Eid Al Adha Holiday. The detailed statistics disclosed that a total of 38 accidents occurred between the 23 and 26 September, 2015.

Brigadier Ghaith Hassan Al Zaabi, Director General of Traffic Coordination at the Ministry of Interior, said that the failure to abide by the rules and regulations of traffic led to the occurrence of accidents. “In a bid to reduce such incidents, the Traffic and Patrols departments nationwide are keen to redouble their efforts and to increase the control and surveillance operations on the road. The departments will intensify traffic outreach programs and promote awareness about the dangers of traffic accidents in addition to the useful methods for avoiding and preventing accidents,” he said.

Brigadier Al Zaabi stressed the importance of complying with traffic guidelines and instructions, of driving carefully, and of leaving a sufficient and safe distance between vehicles. He spoke of the need to avoid obstructing traffic by parking haphazardly; not to inappropriately park in spaces dedicated for those with disabilities; and to not impede the work of emergency personnel by parking in spaces allocated for emergency, ambulance, and Civil Defense vehicles.

The Director General of Traffic Coordination reiterated the necessity of fully complying with the laws, rules, and regulations of traffic. He urged for motorists to observe the legal speed limits on roads, to spare themselves and others from the risk of traffic accidents and the subsequent result of casualties and losses.  He also warned against using mobile phones while driving, whether to talk or text; stressing that such actions distract the driver and increases reaction times, which leads to accidents.

OT Selected by Allstar to Migrate Their Fuel Cards to EMV

COLOMBES, France - Tuesday, September 29th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Oberthur Technologies (OT), a world leader in digital security solutions for the mobility space, announced its selection by Allstar, UK’s leading fuel card provider, to support the migration of their fuel cards from magnetic stripe to EMV chip cards. Allstar’s 1.1 million cardholders will benefit from payment security and ease-of-use over more than 7,600 filling stations all across the UK.

In Europe, EMV migration is completed for payment cards issued by banks, thus protected against fraud, including in the UK where EMV has proven its efficiency. But there are still a lot of other payment cards, issued by various types of retail players (fuel/fleet, supermarkets, luncheon vouchers, etc.) that are still using magstripe technology. Those issuers thus become at risk and are the potential next targets for fraudsters.

This is why Allstar has decided to improve the security and enhance the capability of their cards by choosing to implement EMV in their new generation of fuel cards. OT is assisting for EMV setup and artwork design, and provides the cards and personalization from its WISE offering. This range of OT services will contribute to reinforce the security of Allstar cards against fraud as well as simplifying the deployment and the shopping experience throughout the network.

With WISE (White label, Independent, Secure, EMV), OT offers products and solutions dedicated to domestic payment or ATM schemes, retailers, fuel retailers, etc. wishing to migrate from magnetic stripe to chip cards to take advantage of all the benefits of EMV (security and interoperability) to enjoy a simplified, safer shopping experience.

“OT is delighted to bring its experience in the smartcard industry to help EMV projects become a reality, as we do in the US market where we are leading EMV migration. We are proud to support the enhancement of fuel card features such as Allstar’s. We are convinced this is a step forward to fight against payment fraud and to enhance customer experience including contactless payment,” said Eric Duforest, Managing Director of OT’s Financial Services Institutions activity.

Peter Bridgen, Managing Director Fleetcor UK Fuel Cards. “This is a major change for us, our network and our customers. By partnering with OT we will be able to offer safe and simple payment means across our extensive portfolio of products and services. OT has a great track record in EMV migration and will be able to support us with its complete solution to allow for a smooth transition.”

The migration is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

231,000 Individuals Benefited from ADP Tourism Brochures in 6 Years

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Friday, September 25th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

An estimated 231,000 individuals have benefited from tourism-related awareness booklets, maps and brochures distributed by the Abu Dhabi Police in the last 6 years, since 2009 and until last year.   Lieutenant Colonel Muzeed Al Otaibi, Chief of the Tourism Police Section at the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) underlined the commitment of the Abu Dhabi Police to dedicate attention to the tourism sector and to provide an appropriate and safe environment for tourists, so as the Emirate remains the most secure and safe tourism destination for families and individuals.   Adding further, he pointed out that the Tourism Police Section endeavors to enhance public awareness of its tasks and duties that serve the tourism sector, with a view to make the Emirate of Abu Dhabi a favored touristic destination; thus reflecting the image of the UAE as a safe and secure country that is convenient enough for tourism.   He explained that the section has deployed 8 awareness touristic platforms at various tourist destinations in Abu Dhabi. These platforms aim to educate the public, especially tourists, about the tasks and cultural services provided by the Tourism Police via a highly qualified team. “This approach would improve security services, provide tourists with the means of comfort, and maintain the security and safety of society in a manner that fosters confidence in the police institution,” noted Lieutenant Colonel Al Otaibi.
Furthermore, Lieutenant Colonel Al Otaibi indicated that the Tourism Police Section operates patrols that work according to a unified work methodology to promote educational, security and prevention awareness in order to combat crime. “The Tourism Police patrols are deployed at any tourism events or activity, in order to reinforce community relationship, and secure tourist sites and facilities. They also receive and handle grievances, inquiries and suggestions according to frameworks that are commensurate with the requirements of this time and age,” he added.
Furthermore, Lieutenant Colonel Al Otaibi emphasized that the Tourism Police Section has well-trained and qualified staff members who have enrolled in specialized training courses in tourism security, and are familiar with foreign languages such as English, French, Chinese, Filipino, Urdu, Persian among others so that they can easily communicate with tourists and deal with them professionally.
Adding further, he said: “The Tourism Police officers carry out their duties via the outreach platforms deployed at various tourist destinations, notably, the Abu Dhabi Corniche; Al Bateen; Mushrif Central Park; Dalma Mall in Al Musaffah; in addition to the Galleria in Al Maryah Island; the YasWaterworld and Yas Mall in Yas Island; the arrivals building at the Abu Dhabi International Airport, alongside a temporary platform at Zayed Port, strongly active during the docking of cruise ships.”
According to Lieutenant Colonel Al Otaibi, the Tourism Police Section seeks to enhance cooperation with members of the public through these platforms. He mentioned that the Section has prepared and distributed a number of awareness publications, such as the “Tourists Guidelines”, and leaflets titled “Going to the Beach”, “Tourists Guidelines”, and “Using Public Transportation”. The Section also released several other awareness-raising brochures, maps, and guidelines on the ethics of tourism and code of conduct that should be followed by tourists visiting the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. These brochures aim to raise tourists’ awareness on the UAE traditions and customs, so as to promote the standards of tourism, and spread greater cultural awareness amongst tourists.
Lieutenant Colonel Al Otaibi also stressed the commitment of the Tourism Police to keep abreast of the latest developments in the world, in order to provide tourism information and guidance to visitors of the Section’s Website in general (www.hr.adpolice.gov.ae/tourismpolice ), and more targeted information to tourists and visitors of touristic sites and beaches in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi in particular. He said: “The Sections acquaints visitors with the Abu Dhabi Police’s efforts and strategy, so as to reinforce the prestigious reputation of the Emirate; provide assistance and guidance to tourists; solve minor obstacles; and offer tips and advice.
It is worth mentioning that the Tourism Police Section, affiliated with the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) at the Directorate General of Police Operations, was established in 2008.  The Section was created to ensure visitors have a safe and enjoyable stay in the emirate, and to maintain the rich cultural and historic heritage of the UAE.

COPD: New Data Support Role of Spiolto® Respimat® as 1st-line Maintenance Therapy and Show Superiority over LABA/ICS

AMSTERDAM. - Monday, September 28th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

OTEMTO® 1&2 post-hoc analysis reinforces quality of life benefits provided by Spiolto® Respimat® right from the initial stage when patients first need maintenance therapy*
Head-to-head ENERGITO® study shows superior lung function improvements with Spiolto® Respimat® versus LABA/ICS FDC

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Boehringer Ingelheim today announced new data from two trials presented at the European Respiratory Society (ERS) International Congress 2015. A post-hoc analysis from OTEMTO® 1&2 indicates that Spiolto® Respimat® provides significant quality of life improvements over Spiriva® Respimat® (tiotropium) or placebo, right from the initial stage when patients first need maintenance therapy.1 These data support the role of Spiolto® Respimat® as a new 1st line maintenance therapy for COPD†. In addition the ENERGITO® study shows that the lung function improvement§ with Spiolto® Respimat® (tiotropium/olodaterol) is superior to a steroid-containing therapy (LABA/ICS FDC‡) in patients with moderate to severe COPD.2

From early in the course of COPD, decreasing lung function makes it more and more difficult for people to breathe. To cope with feeling breathless, patients reduce their activity and change their lifestyles which can lead to a ‘downward spiral’ of their condition.3 This in turn results in a large physical and emotional impact on people living with the disease.4 Providing optimal treatment right from the start of maintenance therapy can give patients the best chance of managing their symptoms, keeping active and maintaining their quality of life.

“These two trials further characterise the relevant benefits Spiolto® Respimat® provides compared to two commonly prescribed maintenance treatments: Spiriva® Respimat® and a LABA/ICS FDC,” said Dr William Mezzanotte, Vice President and Head of Respiratory Medicine at Boehringer Ingelheim. “The lung function and quality of life improvements shown in these trials add to the growing body of evidence supporting the benefit of using Spiolto® Respimat® at the initiation of maintenance therapy for COPD.”

OTEMTO® 1&2 - data reinforce Spiolto® Respimat® benefits as 1st-line maintenance therapy

A post-hoc analysis of the OTEMTO® 1&2 trials* (NCT01964352/ NCT02006732), presented at ERS for the first time, shows that Spiolto® Respimat® provides a clinically meaningful 4 point improvement in quality of life§§ compared to placebo in COPD patients with GOLD 2 disease.1 In the same patient group, 13% more patients achieved a clinically meaningful improvement in quality of life with Spiolto® Respimat® compared to Spiriva® Respimat® (52.8% compared to 39.2%).5

“With no cure for COPD, improving quality of life is one of the major goals of treatment,” said Dave Singh, Professor of clinical pharmacology and respiratory medicine, University of Manchester. “When many patients are first diagnosed their condition is already declining rapidly. Doing as much as possible, early on, can give patients the best opportunity to maintain a good quality of life for longer. This sub-analysis shows that Spiolto® Respimat® could give patients this opportunity.”

These latest results add to the recently published OTEMTO® 1&2 data in Respiratory Medicine,6 which show Spiolto® Respimat® provides consistent improvements in lung function, breathlessness and quality of life over Spiriva® Respimat® (tiotropium) or placebo. The data also shows that Spiolto® Respimat® provides a safety profile similar to Spiriva® Respimat® or placebo. Incidence of adverse events (AEs) was broadly similar across treatment groups, with a higher incidence of AEs leading to discontinuation in the placebo groups compared to the treatment groups.6

ENERGITO® - superior lung function improvements over LABA/ICS FDC

Also presented for the first time, data from ENERGITO® (NCT01969721) show that Spiolto® Respimat® met all lung function endpoints**, which included a 42% improvement in trough FEV1, compared to the twice daily LABA/ICS salmeterol/fluticasone propionate in patients with moderate to severe COPD.2

ICS, or steroid-containing therapies, can be associated with potential serious side-effects and guidelines only recommend the use of these treatments in patients with severe COPD and frequent exacerbations (more than 2 per year).7 Despite this, in clinical practice ICS-based therapies are widely used across all COPD stages even for patients with low exacerbation risk who have less severe COPD. In this respect, the results from ENERGITO® add to data from the large-scale WISDOM study,8 raising questions about whether the benefits of ICS outweigh the potential side-effects associated with this class of treatment.

“ICS-containing therapies certainly have a role in the management of COPD but questions remain regarding when to use these treatments,” said Professor Kai-Michael Beeh, Insaf GmbH Institut für Atemwegs-forschung, Wiesbaden, Germany. “The ENERGITO® results further support the potential benefit of Spiolto® Respimat® as a COPD maintenance therapy and the notion that steroid-containing therapies may only be required in a population of patients with more severe stages of the disease and frequent exacerbations.”

The OTEMTO® 1&2 and ENERGITO® trials are part of the >15,000 patient TOviTO® Phase III clinical trial programme investigating the efficacy and safety of Spiolto® Respimat® in COPD. The results build on the pivotal phase III TONADO® trials that demonstrated Spiolto® Respimat® provides significant improvements in lung function, breathlessness, quality of life and reduction in rescue medication use over Spiriva® Respimat® right from the initial disease stages when patients first need maintenance therapy.9,10 Data also showed that Spiolto® Respimat® was well tolerated with a favourable safety profile that was similar to tiotropium or olodaterol alone.9

LONDON - Thursday, September 24th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Denham Capital, a leading global energy-focused private equity firm, announced today a partnership with Jenner Renewables. The Madrid-based independent power producer will develop, finance and construct renewable power generation assets globally. Initially, the company will focus on selected countries in Latin America, the Middle East and North Africa.

“We are very excited to partner with Denham Capital, a firm that not only brings capital to our efforts but also provides a deep global industry network and a wealth of knowledge in the power sector,” said Jorge Calvet, the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Jenner Renewables. “This partnership will allow us to begin developing wind, solar and small hydro projects in countries where we see a clear need for this type of power generation.”

The investment bolsters the Denham Power team’s Latin American presence, joining Brazil’s Rio Energy, a renewables company which now has 54 megawatts of operational assets and more than 200 megawatts of assets in construction across the region.

“This investment allows us to expand our reach in Latin America, a region where we see a big demand for power generation and an attractive opportunity for renewable power. At the same time, it creates a global platform that will allow us to execute in other geographies where wind can effectively compete with the current cost of power and provide an economic source of generation,” noted Scott Mackin, Managing Partner and Co-President at Denham Capital. “We are very happy to work with Jorge and the Jenner team. Their global experience and track record is outstanding, and I have no doubt their skills will allow us to execute successful investments and bring needed power generation capacity to Latin America and other places around the world.”

Granting of this approval in Japan represents an extremely important milestone for Takeda, and we expect that this drug, which is the first-line therapy overseas for relapsing-remitting multiple sclerosis, can contribute to the therapy of Japanese patients with multiple sclerosis. We will continue to make efforts to deliver drugs that are needed by patients and healthcare professionals.

More than 80% of patients are categorized into the relapsing-remitting type. The morbidity in patients is estimated to be approximately 18,000 in Japan, and its prevalence shows an increasing trend.

Masimo Donates $5 Million in Medical Equipment to Assist Jordan in Providing Healthcare to Over 1 Million Syrian Refugees

Relief Effort Progress Highlighted at the Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting in New York, September 26-29, 2015

IRVINE, Calif - Monday, September 28th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Masimo (NASDAQ: MASI) announced progress today at the 2015 Clinton Global Initiative Annual Meeting towards its commitment to donate $5 million in Signal Extraction Technology® Pulse Oximeters and Pulse CO-Oximeters® and other medical equipment to Jordanian hospitals to help improve patient care for Syrian and Iraqi refugees, as well as Jordanian citizens. A progress report video highlighting the Masimo relief effort was featured at the Plenary Session called Investing in Prevention and Resilient Health Systems. The first shipment of equipment is already in use at Al-Bashir hospital in Amman. The rest of the equipment will arrive at the Ministry of Health Office in Jordan shortly. Masimo also committed to provide ongoing training and technical support to the clinicians in Jordan.

The wars in Syria and Iraq are one of the largest ongoing humanitarian crises in the world, with over an estimated million people seeking refuge now living within Jordan’s borders, more than 600,000 of whom are registered with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR). Managing healthcare is a critical requirement of stability during crises and, while new hospitals are being built near refugee camps, the vast majority of refugees reside in existing communities, heightening the demand for health services throughout Jordan. The significant burden of providing healthcare services both for routine and emergency needs is worsening daily.

“The people of Jordan have opened their hearts and country to help their neighbors in need,” said Joe Kiani, Founder and CEO of Masimo. “The situation in Syria keeps getting worse. The people of Jordan are our heroes – taking in the Palestinian refugees, the Iraqi refugees, then the Egyptian refugees, and now the large influx of Syrian refugees. We knew our plan for aid needed to be long-term. We not only donated the much needed oximeters, other medical equipment, and supplies but we also committed to train and provide continued technical support for the Jordanian clinicians that assist in the front line care of the people of Jordan. The need is great and it is too overwhelming for just a few countries to shoulder. As global citizens, we all need to get involved and help the people of Syria and those trying to save them.”

Masimo’s commitment to Jordan is one of several ongoing CGI commitments, and was made at a roundtable meeting convened by CGI in 2014, at which President Clinton and his Majesty King Abdullah Il ibn Al Hussein of Jordan met with Masimo’s Joe Kiani, among others, to discuss the humanitarian crisis.

The measurements provided by pulse oximeters are often referred to as the “fifth vital sign.” In a report published by the Jordanian government, they are identified as one of the most needed pieces of hospital equipment. Pulse oximeters allow a health worker to monitor a person’s oxygen levels. Confirming oxygen levels in the blood is critical as it helps identify those in need of care, those who are deteriorating, and those who are not. Pulse oximeters are widely used from health clinics to emergency departments, from surgery and the intensive care unit to the general floor. Over 100 million patients are monitored with Masimo SET® pulse oximeters around the world and in more than 100 comparative studies Masimo SET® outperformed other technologies. Researchers have found that Masimo SET® in combination with changes in clinical practice led to a reduction in retinopathy of prematurity (ROP) in preterm babies in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU)¹ and an increase of 31% in the detection of newborns with critical congenital heart disease (CCHD) when used as a part of the CCHD screening protocol.2 Researchers found improved outcomes3 following the installation of continuous patient monitoring with Masimo SET® on post-surgical patients, including that zero patients suffered brain damage or died over a five-year period.4 A recent study with a Masimo Pulse CO-Oximeter® (SpHb and PVI) also showed that 30-day mortality after surgeries dropped by 25%.5
