ADP Wins International NASRO Award for “Safer Schools” Project

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Tuesday, May 19th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The Department of Community Police at the Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters (GHQ) won the Safe School Award from the American National Association of School Resource Officers (NASRO) for the “Safer Schools” project.

Upon winning the award, Major General Dr. Nasser Lakhrebani Al Nuaimi, Secretary General of the Office of HH Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, said: “This award crowns the efforts that have been made to raise the position of the UAE in international forums.”

He also hailed Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, for his support and keenness to continue striving for greater development and excellence; for his march forward in pursuit of innovation; and for proposing creative initiatives to accomplish further achievements for the proud nation.

The Secretary General congratulated the team of the advanced “Safer Schools” project, wishing them more success, and urging them to continue striving to achieve excellence. “Continue your efforts in order to fulfil the hopes of everyone who wishes to achieve the highest levels in the provision of police, security, and community services for citizens and residents alike in this great nation,” he said.

In a congratulatory message to the Abu Dhabi Police (ADP), the NASRO Awards committee chair, Earl Roach, said: “The win was well deserved, as you have far surpassed the other applicants of this award.” The message further stressed the superiority and marked accomplishments of the ADP, represented by the Department of Community Police, by highlighting how the “Safer Schools” project set a clear example of how to implement ongoing communication between community police offers and school administrations.

Colonel Mubarak bin Muhairom, General Director of the Community Protection and Crime Prevention at the General Secretariat of the Office of H.H Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, said: “Winning this award confirms the clear vision of the police command, as they have laid the foundations for police development and have set the course towards more serious and innovative work methods that are highly beneficial for the community of the UAE.”

He continued by pointing out that the path towards achieving such an accomplishment was arduous and required significant training and preparation. “It was hard work, and our Quality and Excellence Team started their preparations for this award in 2014,” he said. By applying the strict criteria of the award, the team prepared all the details of the project while conducting trainings for 22 personnel from the Department of Community Police in cooperation with NASRO. The trainings took place during 2014-2015 and included various school resource officer fields, the methods to achieve safer schools, and the best ways to manage crises and problems.

Colonel Mubarak bin Muhairom pointed out that the “Safer Schools” project was implemented in three schools as a part of an MoU signed with the Abu Dhabi Educational Council (ADEC). “The preparation phase was the most challenging,” he said, as he described how specialists conducted surveys and questionnaires regarding student behavior and attendance. Students were also involved in a number of meetings in order to provide additional feedback about student behavior in the schools.

“The ‘Safer Schools’ project team from the Department of Community Police participated in student activities and held a number of highly interactive lectures regarding the concept of common responsibility in security and society,” he said.  The lectures aimed to promote respect towards others and to also explain the methods of crime prevention and environment preservation.

It is worth mentioning that NASRO is dedicated to providing the highest quality of training to school-based law enforcement officers in order to promote safer schools and safer kids. NASRO, founded in 1991 in the United States, operates on the “triad” concept of school-based policing, which divides the School Resource Officer responsibilities into three areas: Teacher, Counselor, and Law Enforcement Officer. By training law enforcement to educate, counsel, and protect school communities, the men and women of NASRO continue to lead by example and promote a positive image of law enforcement to the youth of the nation.

School Resource Officer programs are founded as collaborative efforts by police agencies, law enforcement officers, educators, students, parents, and communities in order to provide safe learning environments and foster a positive relationship with the youth.
