Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Wednesday, May 6th 2015 [ME NewsWire]
The Abu Dhabi Police, represented by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate, enhanced traffic awareness in collaboration with the Saaed Society to Reduce Traffic Accidents. The awareness programs were organized within the activities of Arab Traffic Week held under the slogan “Start with Yourself… Be Committed”. The activities are held in order to urge motorists and road users in Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, and the Western Region to: abide by traffic laws and regulations; adhere to the designated speed limits on internal and external roads; always wear seatbelts; cross the roads only via the designated areas and crosswalks; and to avoid using hand-held mobile phones while driving.
Colonel Jamal Salem Al Ameri, the Executive Director of the Saaed Society, indicated that the awareness activities took place on various roads in Abu Dhabi. He noted that the activities included the participation of students from the Al Ikhlas Private School in Abu Dhabi, who wore their traditional Gulf clothing to join in the activities such as distributing flowers and letters to motorists. “Such steps are essential to reach out to the community and to maintain the rights of future generations in order to ensure their safety by not exposing them to traffic accidents,” Colonel Al Ameri said.
Colonel Al Ameri pointed out to the several awareness lectures that had been implemented in the public and private sectors; through which drivers from both Emirates Transport and the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAAD) learned about proper traffic-related behaviors. “The lectures included realistic and educational films that highlighted the most prominent reasons behind most traffic accidents,” he said. “Traffic accidents mainly occur due to: suddenly swerving, failure to leave a sufficient distance between vehicles, speeding, merging onto a major road before ensuring there is adequate space, bursting tires, not staying within the designated lanes, neglectfulness or preoccupation, and overloaded vehicles that exceed the mandated capacity.”
On a side note, the Western Region Traffic Section intensified awareness targeting drivers within the context of Arab Traffic Week. For his part, Major Suhail Sayah Al Mazroui, Chief of the Western Region Traffic Section, noted that the activities included distributing awareness publications on roads throughout the Western Region. Activities also included urging each motorist and road user to follow the guidelines of this year’s slogan, to be self-disciplined and implement change by starting with themselves, to abide by traffic rules and regulations, and to cross the roads via the designated crosswalks.
Adding further, he emphasized the need to be conscientious and to make the right decision to reduce traffic accidents and the subsequent deaths and serious injuries. He called upon all segments of society to enhance their efforts to improve traffic safety levels, “because traffic safety is a shared responsibility between the individual and the community.”
He continued by urging everyone to adhere to the enforced laws and regulations of the country. Correspondingly, he additionally advised to always carry valid vehicle and driving licenses and to be prepared to submit them to the officers of the police and traffic patrols upon their request in order to avoid any legal repercussions.
