Migrating backups from AspenTech’s Quantum tape libraries and Dell EMC NetWorker to ExaGrid and Veeam has resulted in many substantial improvements in its backup and recovery environment, including:

    fast and easy VM recoveries and data restores, improving IT’s user response time.

The introduction of data deduplication to AspenTech’s environment maximized its backup storage by reducing its data footprint. “Deduplication has saved us from what used to cause a lot of headaches,” said Richard Copithorne, principal systems administrator at AspenTech. “When I look at our environment—just at our headquarters alone—we are getting terrific deduplication, which saves us significant money on disk, and we don’t worry about running out of storage anytime soon.”

Changing backup solutions has also had a significant impact on AspenTech’s nightly backup jobs. “We are able to back up our entire environment at headquarters in four hours, and in some of our international locations, the entire environment is backed up in an hour. Using tape, a full backup of a VM would sometimes take 24 hours, but we are now able to leverage ExaGrid and Veeam to back up the same amount of data in an hour, and that includes deduplication,” said Copithorne.

In addition to data reduction and improved backup windows, data restoration became a quick and efficient process. According to Copithorne, one of the more significant advantages of using ExaGrid with Veeam is the ability to stand up a VM almost immediately with just a few clicks, and doing an instant VM restore or creating a clone copy is “amazingly easy.” Single file restores from tape that previously took up to an hour now take ten minutes, enabling IT to be more responsive to user requests.

Like most other organizations still using tape libraries, AspenTech’s IT staff found the backup and restore/recovery process to be highly time consuming, taking them away from other important IT initiatives. The efficiency gains resulting from the system’s performance and reliability alleviates the need for Copithorne to be hands-on, and he has found that to be a significant advantage.

Finally, in a Divided America, Something 81% Can Agree on: Poll Commissioned by Endowment for Clean Oceans Shows Widespread Voter Concern About the Trillions of Pieces of Plastic in the Ocean

From Tea Party Backers to Occupy Wall Street Sympathizers, to those who Own a Gun to those Who Never have Owned a Gun

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- A recent Zogby Analytics nationwide online survey of 1,200 likely voters in the U.S. (find cross tabs here), commissioned by the Endowment for Clean Oceans, had a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1%, found:

    81% of likely voters are concerned about “the trillions of macro and micro pieces of plastics in the oceans,” of that 46% are very concerned and 35% are somewhat concerned.

The United Nations estimates there are 51 trillion pieces of micro plastic now in the ocean. The most widely accepted estimate of macro pieces of plastic in the ocean is 5 trillion. There are an estimated 3.5 trillion fish in the ocean. In other words, estimates are that there are sixteen times more macro and micro pieces of plastic in the ocean than there are fish.

The responses of voters concerned about the trillions of macro and micro pieces of plastic in the ocean were virtually identical between those with a career (81.9%) and those in the ‘gig economy’ (81.8%).

Interestingly, the difference between those sympathetic to the Tea Party (81.7%) and those sympathetic to Occupy Wall Street (85.5%) was 3.8%, just slightly more than the poll’s 3.1% margin of error.

The percentage of likely voters who are gun owners who are concerned about the trillions of micro and macro pieces of plastic in the ocean (80.5%) is virtually identical to the percentage of likely voters who have never owned a gun (80.2%).

The consensus crossed demographic and generational as well as political divides. Substantial majorities of Millennials—age 18-29 (80%), and Boomers—age 65+ (86%), were “very” and “somewhat concerned” about the trillions of pieces of plastic in the ocean.

“It’s safe to say that everybody of every political stripe, from those sympathetic to Occupy Wall Street and those who have never owned a gun to those sympathetic to the Tea Party and those who own a gun – everyone is concerned about the trillions of pieces of plastic in the ocean,” said Daniel Perrin, Founder and CEO, Endowment for Clean Oceans. “As well they should be, it’s a complete outrage that no global, systemic system has been deployed to clean up the ocean and we still have not replaced plastics with a true, actually biodegradable material.”

“Through our two plastics contest we aim to find a truly biodegradable and economically viable replacement for the five most commonly used plastics, and to find and promote the best technology or plan to systemically, on a global scale, remove the micro and macro plastics in the ocean,” said Perrin. “Pierre-Yves Cousteau taught me it’s ‘the ocean’ because 71% of the Earth is covered in water and is one continuous body of water -- thus it’s ‘the ocean.’”

    80% of likely voters are more likely “to shop in a store that was working to find an innovative solution to remove micro and macro pieces of plastic from the ocean,” of which 46% were very likely and 34% were somewhat likely.
    84% shoppers who shopped at Amazon every week and 77% of shoppers who shopped at WalMart every week were more likely “to shop in a store that was working to find an innovative solution to remove micro and macro pieces of plastic from the ocean.”
    83% of likely voters -- 80% of males and 86% of females -- would be more likely “to shop in a store that was working to find a truly bio-degradable and economically viable replacement for plastic.” Of these voters, 51% would be very likely and 32% would be somewhat likely.

Of the 83% of voters who would be more likely “to shop in a store that was working to find a truly bio-degradable and economically viable replacement for plastic,” 86% were Democrats and 78% were Republicans.

Of the 83% of likely voters who were more likely “to shop in a store that was working to find a truly bio-degradable and economically viable replacement for plastic,” 86% were current gun owners and 82% had never owned a gun, 81% were NASCAR fans and 85% “self IDed as social networkers” and 78% shopped at WalMart every week while 87% were every week Amazon shoppers.

The Campaign is aimed to inspire and encourage women dealing with infertility, the campaign consisted of series of posts on social media and a video featuring several influential Emirati women that not only highlighted their achievements, but also reduced the stigma associated with infertility.

In an effort to encourage women to be more confident and comfortable with the situation, Fakih’s video featured influential Emirati women as Sheikha Dr Alia Al Qassimi – a Gynecologist specialized in plastic aesthetics and reconstructive surgery, Chief Executive of the Social Care and Development sector of the Dubai Government, Dr. Maryam Matar - Chairperson and Founder of the UAE Genetic Diseases Association. As role models and pioneers in their respective fields, these women shared their achievements and addressed several questions revolving around infertility, including why is infertility considered a taboo, the right age for pregnancy, latest treatment options available to treat infertility, cutting-edge techniques as egg-freezing and much more.

“Women who suffer from infertility, suffer alone at most times. They suffer from discrimination, stigma and ostracism. As such, most women shy away from discussing this topic in open, which can result into devastating consequences. It can make a woman feel isolated, disinherited or assaulted and can even lead to depression. Our campaign was an effort to get these women to talk and discuss their problems, whilst gather the right information and evidence which could help them pursue the right treatment to address infertility,” said Mrs. Wafa El Ali, Deputy CEO at Fakih IVF Group.

It has been observed that a growing number of Emirati couples suffer from Infertility. Infertility can be based on many reasons of which 1/3 is attributed to the female partner, 1/3 is attributed to a male partner, and 1/3 is a caused by a combination of both partners or sometimes unexplained. With the help of this campaign, Fakih IVF Fertility Center aimed to remove the stigma associated with infertility and encourage women to share their stories and give hope to those who are yet to embark their journey towards motherhood.

The aim was to challenge the perception about infertile women, and provide medical education and awareness for the condition, which could help improve access to safe and effective fertility care.

Iraq is among the most non-developed countries in the agro-food industry across Middle East and North Africa. The country lost its glory owing to the wars in the last 2 decades, extremist conflicts, drought and past sanctions. The development of the agro-food industry slowed since 2003 and the country depended on imports to cater to its essential needs. Many SMEs have either closed down or operating at only 20-30% of their capacity due to restrictions which hamper their productivity.

Now that the ISIS conflicts have subsided, stabilisation and humanitarian efforts are being taken, along with budgets allocated by large international financiers (Word Bank, IMF, etc.). These measures are expected to revitalize the sector. Food security, self-sufficiency, benefit for poor population in both rural and urban areas are some of the key objectives of Iraqi agro-food policies, as part of the 2018/19 Budget.

As a part of the agro-foods industry, the Iraq packaged foods sector has great potential to grow. Iraq’s population is expected to boom, reaching over 47 million people by 2025, and perhaps as much as 50 million by 2035. Besides, factors like large youth population, rise in GDP per capita and ongoing security stabilization programs are expected to drive the packaged foods market in Iraq. Most importantly, Iraq hosts more than 20 million Shia pilgrims every year which increases the market to more than 60 million people.

“Canned foods, semi-prepared meals, cereals, pasta, pickles, snacks and confectioneries are expected to grow at CAGR of 8-10% within the next 5 years. “Poverty reduction and food security programs supported by World Bank and IMF to raise household disposable incomes and reduce the unemployment rate among youth population are key market drivers for the packaged foods market in the next 5 years. As a result, it is expected that the quality will be more important than price among mid-level citizens. Western tastes, beside quality of packaging and more natural tastes are going to be more important among youth population in Iraq”, said Mirmohammad. “The Iraqi food market craves for western style supermarkets and large fast food chain services in large cities like Baghdad, Basra and KRG region”.

In spite of the challenges of doing business in Iraq, it calls for emerging investment opportunities from global players. Renovations, technology upgradation, modern management and appropriate supply chain systems are key development factors for the Iraqi packaged food industry. Apart from that, the country needs billions of dollars investment as an immediate outlay to develop relevant infrastructures such as water, electricity, transportation fleets, warehouses, cold storages, etc.

Food security and unemployment being major concerns, the Government plans to support local manufacturing and cut imports by at least 30-35% within the next 5 years. Currently, the country imports more than USD 6 billion of agro-food products (both officially and under the table cross border supplies) from neighbours as local manufacturing cannot meet more than 20-25% of domestic demand. Insufficient agricultural feedstock, expensive logistics and lack of liquidity is the reason for local food companies to lack a competitive edge over international rivals.

The initial plan is to leverage managerial and technological leadership of global players to revitalise local manufacturing facilities in dates pressing, dairies, vegetable oils, flour mills, pasta, canned and frozen foods, bottled water, soft drinks and bread products. An attractive legal framework has been established for greater protection and incentives for new investors. To facilitate investment, the National Investment Law 13 (2006) has been amended to allow non-Iraqis to own land, as well as investment partnerships with state-owned enterprises. The same law exempts foreign companies from tax for up to 10 years and import fees for a period of three years.

Post the ISIS war, the outlook for foreign direct investment in Iraq is expected to improve with strengthened security and a more normalised business environment. Consequently, both regional and global alliances will support the country in its reconstruction efforts are this is expected to drive the economy’s growth in the mid-term. As a result, Iraq can be an important emerging market destination for regional and global players; however, having a good market share requires a great understanding of the socio-cultural composition besides religion and taste factors.
