MoI: Training Courses on the Use of Defibrillators

At 79 Different Sites Nationwide

Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates - Saturday, August 22nd 2015 [ME NewsWire]

The Emergency and Public Safety Department, representing the Ministry of Interior, organized a set of training courses for employees and individuals at the various public facilities on the use of automatic defibrillators, so as to administer timely first aid pending the arrival of ambulance services in the event of an emergency in a public place.   The Ministry of Interior had installed a total of 79 defibrillators at various locations at the countrywide level. This initiative comes in response to the directives issued by Lt. General HH Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Interior, to install defibrillators in public places across the UAE to maintain the health and safety of individuals, by  training staff members on how to operate the device for the benefit of customers.

Lieutenant Colonel Mohammed Ibrahim Al Ameri, Head of the Emergency and Public Safety Department at the Abu Dhabi Police, noted that the department will pursue its endeavor to train citizens and residents on how to use the defibrillators by organizing training courses at the various locations where they are already installed. “Training will be delivered by qualified experts with international accreditation from the American Heart Association, to empower members of the public to administer first aid in the event of an emergency in a public place, to resuscitate patients until they can be transferred to a hospital. This approach is intended to raise awareness on the importance of first aid, and to upgrade services according to international standards,” he said.

Adding further, Lieutenant Colonel Al Ameri explained that the certificates awarded to trainees are accredited by the American Heart Association and authorize them to conduct Cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and defibrillation. “The new devices are user-friendly, safe and smart - They won’t provide electric shocks until they detect that the heart is failing. It analyses pulse and heart signals to detect a ventricular fibrillation that requires an electric shock,” he explained.

For his part, Lieutenant Colonel Omar Ahmed Al Dhaheri, Chief of the Training Section at the Emergency and Public Safety Department, noted that the training courses will target the employees of Bawabat Al Sharq Mall in BaniYas, the Dalma Mall in Mussafah, the Mushrif Mall, Marina Mall and Abu Dhabi Mall in Abu Dhabi. “The courses aim to help employees maintain the skills they have acquired, and allow them to perform cardiopulmonary resuscitation,” he said. He added that the courses will include the different facilities that have been equipped with a defibrillator, as part of an extensive program designed to this end.

The defibrillator is used when there are symptoms of circulatory failure in a person with suspected heart failure. The symptoms include fainting, irregular breathing, and a weak or absent pulse.
