nCipher: New Digital Initiatives, IoT and Cloud Adoption Driving the Use of Trusted Cryptography Revealed by 2019 Global Encryption Trends Study

SUNRISE, Fla. & CAMBRIDGE, England -Thursday 28 March 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- nCipher Security, the provider of trust, integrity and control for business critical information and applications, announces that as organizations embrace the cloud and new digital initiatives such as the internet of things (IoT), blockchain and digital payments the use of trusted cryptography to protect their applications and sensitive information is at an all-time high, according to the 2019 Global Encryption Trends Study from the Ponemon Institute.

With corporate data breaches making the headlines on an almost daily basis, the deployment of an overall encryption strategy by organizations around the world has steadily increased. This year, 45% of respondents say their organization has an overall encryption plan applied consistently across the entire enterprise with a further 42% having a limited encryption plan or strategy that is applied to certain applications and data types.

Threats, drivers and priorities

Employee mistakes continue to be the most significant threat to sensitive data (54%), more than external hackers (30%) and malicious insiders (21%) combined. In contrast, the least significant threats to the exposure of sensitive or confidential data include government eavesdropping (12%) and lawful data requests (11%).

The main driver for encryption is protection of an enterprise’s intellectual property and the personal information of customers – both 54% of respondents.

With more data to encrypt and close to 2/3 of respondents deploying 6 or more separate products to encrypt it, policy enforcement (73%) was selected as the most important feature for encryption solutions. In previous years, performance consistently ranked as the most important feature.

Cloud data protection requirements continue to drive encryption use, with encryption across both public and private cloud use cases growing over 2018 levels, and organizations prioritizing solutions that operate across both enterprise and cloud environments (68%).

Data discovery the number one challenge

With the explosion and proliferation of data that comes from digital initiatives, cloud use, mobility and IoT devices, data discovery continues to be the biggest challenge in planning and executing a data encryption strategy with 69% of respondents citing this as their number one challenge.

Trust, integrity, control

The use of hardware security modules (HSMs) grew at a record year-over-year level from 41% in 2018 to 47%, indicating a requirement for a hardened, tamper-resistant environment with higher levels of trust, integrity and control for both data and applications. HSM usage is no longer limited to traditional use cases such as public key infrastructure (PKI), databases, application and network encryption (TLS/SSL); the demand for trusted encryption for new digital initiatives has driven significant HSM growth over 2018 for code signing (up 13%), big data encryption (up 12%), IoT root of trust (up 10%) and document signing (up 8%). Additionally, 53% of respondents report using on-premises HSMs to secure access to public cloud applications.

Dr. Larry Ponemon, chairman and founder of the Ponemon Institute, says:
“The use of encryption is at an all-time high, driven by the need to address compliance requirements such as the EU General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), California Data Breach Notification Law and Australia Privacy Amendment Act 2017, and the need to protect sensitive information from both internal and external threats as well as accidental disclosure. Encryption usage is a clear indicator of a strong security posture with organizations that deploy encryption being more aware of threats to sensitive and confidential information and making a greater investment in IT security.”

John Grimm, senior director of strategy and business development at nCipher Security, says:
“Organizations are under relentless pressure to protect their business critical information and applications and meet regulatory compliance, but the proliferation of data, concerns around data discovery and policy enforcement, together with lack of cybersecurity skills makes this a challenging environment. nCipher empowers customers by providing a high assurance security foundation that ensures the integrity and trustworthiness of their data, applications and intellectual property.”

Other key trends include:

The highest prevalence of an enterprise encryption strategy is reported in Germany (67%) followed by the United States (65%), Australia (51%), and the United Kingdom (50%).
Payment-related data (55% of respondents) and financial records (54% of respondents) are most likely to be encrypted. Financial records had the largest increase on this list over last year, up 4%.
The least likely data type to be encrypted is health-related information (24% of respondents), which is a surprising result given the sensitivity of health information and the recent high-profile healthcare data breaches.
61% of respondents classify key management as having a high level of associated “pain” (a rating of 7+ on a scale of 10). This figure is almost identical to the 63% of organizations that use six or more separate encryption products, suggesting there is clear correlation between the two findings.
Support for both cloud and on-premises deployment of encryption has risen in importance as organizations have increasingly embraced cloud computing and look for consistency across computing styles.

Initial results from the EMPRISE real-world study of empagliflozin compared with DPP-4 inhibitors presented at ACC.19 and AMCP 2019

 EMPRISE is an ongoing real-world evidence study in 35,000 people with type 2 diabetes in the US, comparing empagliflozin with DPP-4 inhibitors;

initial results based on the first two years of the study were presented at AMCP 2019 and ACC.191,2 Initial results presented at AMCP 2019 showed empagliflozin was associated with reductions in all-cause hospitalisations compared with DPP-4 inhibitors, and significantly fewer recurrent emergency department visits and physician office visits1

Initial results presented at ACC.19 showed empagliflozin was associated with a reduction in hospitalisation for heart failure or all-cause mortality, and was not associated with an increased risk of bone fracture or lower leg amputation compared to DPP-4 inhibitors2

INGELHEIM, Germany, & INDIANAPOLIS, Ind.-Thursday 28 March 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Boehringer Ingelheim and Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) announced initial results from the EMPagliflozin compaRative effectIveness and SafEty (EMPRISE) real-world evidence study that show that empagliflozin is associated with a 22 percent relative risk reduction in all-cause hospitalisations, compared to DPP-4 inhibitors, within a mean follow-up of 5.4 months.1 Among those admitted to hospital, people treated with empagliflozin were discharged earlier compared to those treated with DPP-4 inhibitors (17,539 matched pairs in each treatment group).1

This press release features multimedia. View the full release here: https://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20190328005311/en/

Results also show that empagliflozin is associated with significantly fewer recurrent emergency department visits and physician’s office visits compared to DPP-4 inhibitors.1 These initial results, observed during the first two years of the EMPRISE real-world evidence study evaluating US-only data, were presented at the Academy of Managed Care Pharmacy (AMCP) Annual Meeting 2019 in San Diego, US.

Initial EMPRISE results support data from the landmark EMPA-REG OUTCOME® trial, which showed a relative risk reduction of 11 percent in all-cause hospitalisations with empagliflozin in people with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.3

“People with diabetes are more likely to be admitted to hospital from any cause than those without the condition, experiencing longer and more costly hospital stays. This can have a substantial impact on healthcare resources,” said Dr Mehdi Najafzadeh, PhD, MSc, MA, of the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacoeconomics, Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Instructor in Medicine, Harvard Medical School and study co-investigator. “Initial results from the EMPRISE real-world study show that empagliflozin is associated with a relative risk reduction in hospitalisations and with a shorter length of hospital stay for people with type 2 diabetes.”

Initial effectiveness and safety data from EMPRISE were also recently presented at the American College of Cardiology’s 68th Annual Scientific Session & Expo in New Orleans, US (ACC.19). Results show that empagliflozin was associated with a 42 percent relative risk reduction in hospitalisation for heart failure* or all-cause mortality compared to DPP-4 inhibitors, and was not associated with a statistically significant increased risk of bone fracture or lower leg amputation compared to DPP-4 inhibitors.2 These results support the findings from the EMPA-REG OUTCOME® trial, which showed that empagliflozin reduced the relative risk of hospitalisation for heart failure or cardiovascular death in people with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease by 34 percent, with no imbalance with bone fractures or lower leg amputation.4

*Broad definition of hospitalisation for heart failure, defined as a discharge diagnosis of heart failure in any position.

About EMPRISE (NCT03363464, EUPAS20677)5
EMPRISE was initiated in 2016 to complement the EMPA-REG OUTCOME® trial results and provide a comprehensive clinical picture of empagliflozin in routine care. By study completion, EMPRISE will provide insights into the comparative effectiveness, safety, healthcare resource utilisation and costs of empagliflozin, compared with DPP-4 inhibitors, in people with type 2 diabetes with and without cardiovascular disease in routine clinical care.

The study will assess the first five years of empagliflozin use in the US between 2014 and 2019. Over 200,000 people with type 2 diabetes from two commercial US healthcare providers and Medicare are projected to be included by study completion. From 2019, additional EMPRISE studies including analyses of data from Asia and Europe will provide insights from different regions of the world with an international perspective on the use of empagliflozin in routine clinical care.

The EMPRISE study was initiated, and is being led, by academic partners from the Division of Pharmacoepidemiology at Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Harvard Medical School, Boston, US. The study is part of an academic collaboration between Brigham and Women’s Hospital and Boehringer Ingelheim.

About EMPA-REG OUTCOME® (NCT01131676)4
EMPA-REG OUTCOME® was a long-term, multicentre, randomised, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of more than 7,000 patients from 42 countries with type 2 diabetes and established cardiovascular disease.

The study assessed the effect of empagliflozin (10 mg or 25 mg once daily) added to standard of care compared with placebo added to standard of care. Standard of care was comprised of glucose-lowering agents and cardiovascular drugs (including for blood pressure and cholesterol). The primary endpoint was defined as time to first occurrence of cardiovascular death, non-fatal heart attack or non-fatal stroke.

The overall safety profile of empagliflozin was consistent with that of previous trials.

About Diabetes and Cardiovascular Disease
More than 425 million people worldwide have diabetes, of which over 212 million are estimated to be undiagnosed.6 By 2045, the number of people with diabetes is expected to rise to 629 million people worldwide.6 Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes, responsible for around 90 percent of diabetes cases in high-income countries.6 Diabetes is a chronic condition that occurs when the body either does not properly produce, or use, the hormone insulin.6

Due to the complications associated with diabetes, such as high blood sugar, high blood pressure and obesity, cardiovascular disease is a major complication and the leading cause of death associated with diabetes.7,8 People with diabetes are two to four times more likely to develop cardiovascular disease than people without diabetes.8 In 2017, diabetes caused four million deaths worldwide, with cardiovascular disease as the leading cause.6 Approximately 50 percent of deaths in people with type 2 diabetes worldwide are caused by cardiovascular disease.9,10

Having a history of diabetes at age 60 can shorten a person’s life span by as much as six years compared with someone without diabetes. And having both diabetes and a history of heart attack or stroke by age 60 can shorten a person’s life span by as much as 12 years compared with someone without these conditions.11

More than 60 guidelines have been updated to endorse type 2 diabetes agents with proven cardiovascular benefits since 2016, including a Consensus Report initiated by the American Diabetes Association® and European Association for the Study of Diabetes, recommending that, in patients with type 2 diabetes and established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease, SGLT2 inhibitors (such as empagliflozin) or GLP1 receptor agonists with proven cardiovascular benefits are recommended as part of glycaemic management.12,13

About Empagliflozin
Empagliflozin (marketed as Jardiance®) is an oral, once daily, highly selective sodium glucose cotransporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitor and the first type 2 diabetes medicine to include cardiovascular death risk reduction data in the label in several countries.14,15,16

Inhibition of SGLT2 with empagliflozin in people with type 2 diabetes and high blood sugar levels leads to excretion of excess sugar in the urine. In addition, initiation of empagliflozin increases excretion of salt from the body and reduces the fluid load of the body’s blood vessel system (i.e. intravascular volume). Empagliflozin induces changes to the sugar, salt and water metabolism in the body that may contribute to the reductions in cardiovascular death observed in the EMPA-REG OUTCOME® trial.

Earth Networks and RIMES Announce Technical Collaboration to Benefit Member Government Weather Services

Regional multi-hazard early warning systems to be enhanced with real-time lightning detection and severe storm nowcasting

GERMANTOWN, Md.-Thursday 28 March 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Earth Networks, a global provider of weather intelligence, announced today it has partnered with the Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for Africa and Asia (RIMES). The partnership will enable a multi-year collaboration program to enhance RIMES’ member state National Hydro-Meteorological Services (NMHS) capacity for early warning of severe weather. The announcement was made at the 6th annual InterMET Asia conference in Singapore.

Together, the two organizations are working to improve access to reliable weather information and early warning capabilities in Africa and Asia. By contributing on-the-ground insights from its weather and lightning networks, Earth Networks is providing critical hyperlocal data to RIMES to help regional NMHS close weather observation gaps in real-time and support more accurate forecasting. These technology enhancements will result in quicker warnings to the public before and during severe weather events.

Earth Networks has years of experience operating a severe weather early warning network throughout RIMES regions that powers a complete suite of visualization, forecasting, storm identification, alerting and tracking services relied upon by government agencies and private enterprises alike. This new agreement with RIMES supports Earth Networks’ commitment to build sustainable public-private weather information services partnerships with NMHS around the globe.

Under the agreement, Earth Networks will collaborate with RIMES and its member states on technical options for commercial solutions to improve forecasting and alerting capabilities for severe weather events. In addition to providing training and development for RIMES staff, Earth Networks will offer comprehensive weather data, including real-time and historical lightning data, weather observations, forecasting, as well as live storm-tracking and alerting through Sferic Maps and Sferic Mobile. RIMES will work to integrate Earth Networks lightning data and alerting capabilities into its multi-hazard early warning platform.

“Having access to Earth Networks unique lightning detection data and technology brings a higher level of situational awareness for incoming severe weather that we are eager to promote within our member states,” said A.R. Subbiah, Director of RIMES. “Our first endeavor using this valuable data is the deployment of a new decision support tool and real-time alerting mobile application in Odisha, the state with India’s highest number of lightning deaths and an area known for frequent and dangerous thunderstorms, cyclones and heavy rain, which causes flooding.”

“We are thrilled to partner with RIMES to assist in building scalable weather monitoring and alerting technologies for NMHS that yield accurate and timely warnings for severe weather conditions,” said Jim Anderson, Senior Vice President, Global Sales at Earth Networks. “Our goal is to further aid RIMES in providing its member governments actionable risk information to reduce the loss of life and destruction of property due to weather.”

With this collaboration, RIMES and its member states have access to an advanced suite of weather alerting and tracking tools from Earth Networks, including:

Total Lightning Detection Network

Operating over 1,700 sensors across 100 countries, Earth Networks Total Lightning Network is the most advanced lightning network in the world. Its ability to comprehensively monitor both in-cloud and cloud-to-ground lightning enables the creation of faster severe weather alerts, lightning-derived radar alternatives and real-time storm visualization.

Real-time Weather Visualization and Alerting with Sferic Maps and Sferic Mobile

Sferic Maps and its companion app Sferic Mobile provide forecasters, disaster management and emergency managers with web-based access to the industry’s best weather detection technologies. Only Sferic Maps shows live radar together with lightning flashes detected by the Earth Networks Total Lightning Network.

Faster Severe Weather Notifications with Dangerous Thunderstorm Alerts

Exclusive to Earth Networks, Dangerous Thunderstorm Alerts (DTA) provide advanced notification of the potential for severe weather, including lightning strikes, heavy rain, hail, strong winds and increased threat of tornadic activity.

High rates of in-cloud lightning serve as precursory indicators of the potential for severe weather activity. By tracking increased in-cloud lightning rates and issuing these alerts, Earth Networks can give advanced notice of severe weather potential by up to 45 minutes.

A Unique Alternative to Radar: PulseRad

While radar has proven an invaluable tool in weather forecasting, alerting and research, many areas of the world lack the financial resources and technical expertise to deploy, operate and maintain a radar solution.

PulseRad—the first practical radar alternative capable of coverage on a national and continental scale—visually resembles radar, is designed to provide similar benefits as radar at a lower cost, updates faster than radar, and can be accessed directly in Earth Networks’ Sferic Maps weather visualization dashboard.

While traditional radar is limited in coverage to less than 300 miles from land-based radar sites, PulseRad is also able to detect storms over oceans, near islands and within mountainous regions, providing crucial information not captured by traditional radar.

Nordson EFD Provides Manufacturers with Helpful Tips for Trouble-Free Cyanoacrylate Dispensing

New guide and video help manufactures select the right dispense systems and fine-tune process adjustments for successful CA dispensing.

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I.-Thursday 28 March 2019 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Nordson EFD, a Nordson company (NASDAQ: NDSN), the world’s leading precision fluid dispensing systems manufacturer, is pleased to introduce a new guide and video to help manufacturers dispense tricky cyanoacrylates (also known as CAs, super glues, or instant adhesives) with greater control for higher production throughput with less rework and fluid waste.

The new Cyanoacrylate Dispensing Guide provides detailed information about the properties of this fast-curing material and how those properties create advantages and disadvantages in production. Choosing the right dispensing systems and components is critical to success, as is establishing the right operating procedures, including special set up and maintenance steps.

The new video, 9 Tips for Trouble-Free Cyanoacrylate Dispensing, provides useful tips about how to prevent moisture from ruining application accuracy and consistency.

When dispensing CAs the strongest bond often comes from the smallest amount of material applied. That’s why it’s important to have precise control of the amount of material dispensed.

“We hope this information helps our customers achieve a more controlled CA dispensing process, which also helps them meet production goals,” said Gil Parenteau, Manager of Sales and Tech Services at Nordson EFD. “Our new cyano guide and video also showcase the significant application expertise that makes EFD an ideal partner to work with on these types of challenging fluid dispensing projects.”
