“The staff of the Mobile Dental Care Unit implementing the outreach program conducted dental examinations and educated the public about oral hygiene, how to properly care for their teeth, and the importance of regularly visiting to the dentist in order to prevent cavities and gum diseases,” said Col. Jassim Al Tunaiji.

“The unit saves both time and money through the provision of dental examinations that are conveniently located and eliminate the need to travel long distances for a check-up,” he said. “The medical team onboard the mobile unit uses the latest medical equipment to provide the dental examinations to all members and segments of society regardless of age. According to Col. Jassim Al Tunaiji, members of the public benefit from the advice given by the medical staff and from the fully-equipped unit that is capable of diagnosing dental diseases. “Through the wide participation of the public with the Mobile Dental Care Unit, a culture of dental care is growing,” he said; mentioning how the unit expands the scale of services provided by the Abu Dhabi Police. “The Mobile Dental Care Unit offers the capability to provide police services for community members, which includes medical services, both in public areas and residences.”

Decrease in Abu Dhabi Traffic Accidents during Ramadan

ABU DHABI, United Arab Emirates - Thursday, July 23rd 2015 [ME NewsWire]

According to the statistics issued by the Traffic and Patrols Directorate at the Directorate General of Central Operations at the Abu Dhabi Police, there were a total of 130 accidents in Abu Dhabi during the month of Ramadan, a drop from the 165 incidents during the same period last year.  The statistics also revealed that the death rates witnessed from the various types of accidents also decreased, down from the 25 deaths last year during Ramadan to a total of 17 this year.

Colonel Hamad Mubarak bin Athath Al Ameri, Head of the Capital’s Traffic Department at the Abu Dhabi Police Traffic and Patrols Directorate attributed the decrease to the efforts of the concerned authorities, and most notably, to their efforts in intensifying control and increasing traffic awareness. According to Col. Al Ameri, the decision to ban trucks from entering Abu Dhabi during peak times also contributed to reducing traffic accidents alongside the cooperation of the public and help of various charities in providing Iftar meals and beverages to motorists in a bid to prevent drivers from speeding.

According to Col. Al Ameri, the main causes of traffic accidents throughout the holy month of Ramadan were due to failure to leave a sufficient distance between vehicles, precarious lane changes, neglectfulness and lack of paying attention, running red lights, speeding, and among others, failure to consider the road conditions.

He stressed the importance of complying with traffic laws and regulations, driving carefully, keeping a safe  distance between vehicles, avoiding blocking traffic due to haphazardly parking in public parking spaces. He warned them against parking in spaces dedicated to people with special needs, and not to park in spaces designated for civil defense or ambulance and rescue teams, as this will hinder their abilities during emergency situations. He additionally urged motorists to avoid using their mobile phones while driving, whether to talk, SMS, or chat.

GSMA Welcomes African Support for Mobile Broadband Growth

African Telecommunications Union Takes Important Step Towards WRC-15

LONDON - Friday, July 24th 2015 [ME NewsWire]

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- John Giusti, Deputy Chief Regulatory Officer, GSMA, commented on the outcome of the final meeting of the African Telecommunications Union (ATU) in Nairobi, ahead of this November’s World Radiocommunication Conference (WRC-15):

“The GSMA welcomes the strong decisions that African governments took at this week’s meeting of the ATU to foster the growth of mobile broadband across the continent. By coming together and agreeing unified proposals, they have shown their support for making more spectrum available to meet the mobile broadband needs of their citizens.

“The upcoming WRC-15 conference in Geneva will determine what spectrum bands will be allocated for mobile services. These decisions will determine the future of the mobile internet. This is particularly important for Africa, the world’s fastest growing mobile region, where mobile broadband is often the only way for people to access the internet. Additional spectrum will be vital in providing the capacity needed to support mobile broadband growth across the region and help bridge the digital divide.

“The ATU is a highly influential member of the international community and decisions coming out of Africa are increasingly shaping policy in other regions. The GSMA is, therefore, pleased with the ATU’s decision to support the L-band for mobile. This band has the potential for widespread global support at WRC-15, driving economies of scale that will benefit consumers in Africa and elsewhere.

“There is more work to be done to ensure there is sufficient spectrum allocated for mobile broadband. Increased support for an allocation in the sub-700MHz UHF band, which offers good geographic coverage, will be essential for connecting rural communities in Africa.

“There is also a need for higher frequency spectrum to meet the intense urban capacity demands and give city dwellers in Africa access to high-speed mobile broadband. African governments have made progress on recognising this growing need and we encourage final decisions to allocate more spectrum to mobile in these capacity bands, specifically 2.7-2.9GHz and 3.6-3.8GHz.

“This November, we will urge all the governments of Africa to make a clear and strong call for significantly more mobile spectrum to realise the ambitions of a digital economy and to create a truly connected society.”
