Boehringer Ingelheim Starts New Campaign: ‘Why wait in IPF?’

INGELHEIM, Germany-Wednesday, February 28th 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

Rare Disease Day draws attention to the importance of early diagnosis and treatment of IPF.
Even though international guidelines recommend to offer antifibrotic treatment to the majority of individuals with IPF, research in Europe shows that around 40% of patients with confirmed IPF do not receive antifibrotic treatment.1
Boehringer Ingelheim provides physicians with insights into progression of IPF as well as the benefits of early diagnosis and intervention.
(BUSINESS WIRE) -- On Rare Disease Day, 28 February, Boehringer Ingelheim emphasises the question: ‘Why wait in IPF?´ while awareness activities are focussing on highlighting the benefits of early diagnosis and considering early treatment of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). IPF is a rare, debilitating and fatal lung disease which affects approximately 3 million people worldwide.2

Diagnosing IPF can be difficult because typically, patients with IPF present with nonspecific symptoms usually attributed to ageing, deconditioning or other comorbidities.2 The median time from first symptoms to diagnosis is around two years.3 Early and accurate diagnosis of IPF is important, as interventions such as antifibrotic therapies, supplemental oxygen treatment, cough management and pulmonary rehabilitation may help patients to better manage their condition.

In IPF a key concern is that many patients who are diagnosed with the disease remain untreated. In 2016, 290 respiratory physicians from five European countries participated in an online survey about IPF treatment in patients under their care. The survey showed that, of patients with a confirmed diagnosis, 40% did not receive treatment.1

IPF is unpredictable and damage is permanent.2 Without appropriate medical intervention the opportunity to slow disease progression is lost. “Slowing disease progression and preserving lung function by reducing decline should be the primary goal for all physicians when treating individuals with IPF. For this reason, initiation of treatment at diagnosis is vital”, commented Professor Toby Maher, Royal Brompton Hospital, UK.

While a cure for IPF has not been found yet, two approved antifibrotic drugs shown to slow disease progression in IPF are recommended for the majority of patients by international guidelines.4 At the time of diagnosis, IPF patients should feel empowered to take an active approach to managing their disease by learning all they can about it, and discussing with their treating physicians what treatment options and approaches are available.

New resources released for Rare Disease Day can be found at Boehringer-Ingelheim.com.

More information on IPF for physicians can be found at inIPF. Further information for patients can be found at Life with IPF.

Hospital Quality Institute, California Hospital Association & Patient Safety Movement Foundation Form Partnership to Enhance Patient Safety Data Transparency

SACRAMENTO, Calif.-Wednesday, February 28th 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- The Hospital Quality Institute (HQI), the California Hospital Association and the Patient Safety Movement Foundation (PSMF) have formed a partnership to accelerate the reduction of medical errors and eliminate preventable patient deaths in hospitals across the Golden State.

The central focus of the partnership will be an innovative, publicly available digital dashboard that will provide timely hospital patient safety data to hospitals, clinicians and consumers alike. Unlike other patient safety tracking systems, which typically rely on data that is up to two years old, the data available on the digital dashboard will be updated regularly and posted on the websites of participating hospitals.

“Patients and the public will be able to access important, up-to-date information on the continuous improvement of patient care provided by California hospitals,” said Julie Morath, HQI President and CEO.

According to Morath, five quality of care measures – central line-associated blood stream infections (CLABSI); surgical site infections; C-section birth rates; sepsis mortality rates; and venous thromboembolism – will be initially featured on the digital dashboard. Participating hospitals will verify their use of evidence-based practices – such as those aimed at preventing post-partum hemorrhage or early recognition and treatment of sepsis - that have been shown to improve patient outcomes. The implementation will then be reported on the digital dashboard.

“Implementing evidence-based practices to eliminate preventable patient harm and publicly disclosing the results is the best way we know for hospitals to eliminate preventable deaths,” stated Joe Kiani, founder of the Patient Safety Movement Foundation. “We applaud California hospitals for taking the bold steps necessary to no longer simply hope for ‘zero,’ but rather to plan for ‘zero’ and achieve the goal. We believe California hospitals will become the safest in the nation.”

Carmela Coyle, President and CEO of the California Hospital Association, noted that the digital dashboard will enable hospitals and clinicians to “identify trends earlier than in the past, which will facilitate continuously improved patient care.”

“We are pleased to be able to support this important work,” Coyle said. “As a result of this collaborative effort, the quality of care for patients will continue to improve across our state.”

HQI is jointly sponsored by CHA and three regional hospital associations - the Hospital Council of Northern and Central California (Hospital Council), the Hospital Association of Southern California (HASC) and the Hospital Association of San Diego and Imperial Counties (HASDIC). The organization works with member hospitals across California to advance the goal of improving patient safety and quality of care.

More than 200,000 U.S. patients and three million worldwide die each year from preventable causes. The Patient Safety Movement Foundation (PSMF) was established through the support of the Masimo Foundation for Ethics, Innovation, and Competition in Healthcare to reduce the number of preventable deaths to zero by 2020 (0X2020). The Patient Safety Movement Foundation was created to unite the healthcare industry by making commitments and connecting people, ideas, and technology to confront safety issues. The Foundation also convenes the World Patient Safety, Science and Technology Summit bringing together some of the world’s best minds for thought-provoking discussions and new ideas that challenge the status quo. By presenting specific, high-impact solutions to meet patient safety challenges, called Actionable Patient Safety Solutions, encouraging medical technology companies to share the data their products are purchased for, and asking hospitals to make commitments to implement the APSS.

World Bank Group and GSMA Announce Partnership to Leverage IoT Big Data for Development

BARCELONA, Spain-Wednesday, February 28th 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim announced today that the institution would partner with the GSMA and mobile network operators around the globe to harness big data from the Internet of Things (IoT) to help end extreme poverty and unlock new drivers of economic growth.

The initiative, announced at the GSMA Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona, will unlock new insights from anonymized data collected by mobile network operators through IoT devices and aggregate data from smartphone use. It will also call on industry leaders, development partners and governments to work together in building a strong enabling environment for the IoT while protecting personal privacy. This is the first broad scope initiative involving the mobile communications industry and a major multilateral development bank, and is convened by the GSMA, which represents nearly 800 mobile network operators and more than 300 companies in the broader mobile ecosystem.

The expansion of mobile networks has created a global infrastructure that generates enormous amounts of data that is invaluable for social and economic development. There are more than 3.8 billion unique mobile subscribers in developing countries; in these markets, more people have access to a mobile phone than to clean water or electricity. GSMA Intelligence estimates there will be 25 billion connections to the Internet of Things globally by 2025, enabling everything from real-time crop monitoring to water leakage detection. Their rapidly growing use in developing countries can produce a wealth of insights for development work.

“The mobile network industry provides the connectivity that is essential for countries to unlock new drivers of economic growth, help make the global market system work for everyone, and meet the world’s rising aspirations,” World Bank Group President Jim Yong Kim said. “Through this initiative we will partner with the mobile industry to harness IoT, big data and other new technologies to solve the world’s largest challenges.”

“This new initiative with the World Bank Group will leverage the mobile networks that we have built and the services we deliver to address some of the most pressing challenges that our world faces today," said Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA. “With IoT and big data, we have the ability to provide insights that can be used across a wide range of applications, from agriculture to environmental protection and beyond. We are pleased to be working with the World Bank on this critical initiative and encourage our operator members globally to join in this effort.”

The initiative calls on mobile operators to use data that they collect through their existing IoT services or through new pilots and partnerships to provide insights and analysis to design and improve projects. This can potentially boost development outcomes from World Bank Group projects – in the last fiscal year, the institution committed approximately $62 billion for new projects in middle- and low-income countries. Operators and governments will also benefit from increased use of big data for development, as it can enable better service provision, creation of new indicators and statistics, and better quality of life for users and citizens in general.

The World Bank Group already has successful examples of applying mobile-enabled IoT and big data to projects. In India, bangle-shaped sensors – wearable IoT data collection devices – allow users to automatically monitor harmful emissions from their stoves, and the data they generate is helping drive a shift to cleaner cookstoves.

Additionally, the World Bank Group will join the GSMA’s Big Data for Social Good Advisory Panel. The GSMA is a strong supporter of development initiatives that involve mobile networks and is one of the inaugural partners of the World Bank-led Digital Development Partnership – DDP.

Latest GSMA Report Highlights Success of Mobile Money with over 690 Million Accounts Worldwide

In 2017 the Mobile Money Industry Processed US$1 Billion a Day, Generating Direct Revenues of $2.4 Billion

BARCELONA-Wednesday, February 28th 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- The GSMA today unveiled its seventh annual ‘State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money’, offering a current snapshot of the mobile money landscape and highlighting the impact that greater financial inclusion has on lives, economies and innovation. The report provides the only comprehensive picture of mobile money around the globe. Today, with more than 690 million registered accounts in over 90 countries, mobile money has evolved into the leading payment platform for the digital economy in many emerging markets. The report shows that, in 2017, the mobile money industry processed transactions worth a billion dollars a day, generating direct revenues of over $2.4 billion.

“As the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) enter their third year, mobile technology is proving to be an essential tool for delivering these global goals with increased connectivity and innovative services enabling more inclusive communities,” said Mats Granryd, Director General, GSMA. “Mobile money remains a central part of this story, contributing to 13 of the 17 SDGs, enabling access to essential services like health and education, empowering women with employment opportunities and reducing poverty by offering life-enhancing financial services, often for the first time.”

New Trends

The report shows a number of new trends in mobile money in 2017, including the accelerated growth of bank-to-wallet interoperability, the growing adoption of smartphones, the proliferation of fintech companies, the digitisation of new sectors of the economy, and renewed efforts by companies and governments to reach the most vulnerable and underserved. Sub-Saharan Africa has long been the epicentre of mobile money and growth in this region shows no sign of slowing, but as the industry has matured, mobile money has also gained traction in other parts of the world. In 2017, for the first time, growth of the industry was led by regions other than Africa. With 47 per cent year-on-year growth, South Asia was the fastest-growing region in terms of registered accounts and now represents 34 per cent of registered accounts globally.

Mobile Money Reaching Scale

A steady increase in active customers, transactions and direct revenue are signs that mobile money is evolving into a sustainable industry and represents an important driver of economic growth in developing markets, particularly through formalising payments, increasing transparency and boosting GDP. With mobile money now available in over 90 countries, including three-quarters of low- and lower-middle-income countries, it has become the leading payment platform for a digital economy in many emerging markets.

The research further shows:

    Strong growth in customer registrations in 2017 led to the addition of over 136 million new registered accounts, bringing the global total to 690 million mobile money accounts, a 25 per cent increase from 2016;
    A growing number of mobile money services are seeing the proportion of their customer base regularly using their service increase to over 50 per cent, especially where providers have a strong distribution network, enabling regulation and rely more on an account-based business model;
More funds are entering and leaving the mobile money ecosystem in digital form; bulk disbursements, bill payments and bank-to-wallet transactions have been the main drivers. In 2017, nearly 25 per cent of incoming funds were digital, compared to nearly 12 per cent in 2012; and
Many successful providers are decreasing the net cost of the agent network – the cost of managing an agent network can account for more than half of total revenues, so this trend can significantly affect investment incentives.

Future Considerations

As a burgeoning fintech community positions itself as the gateway of choice for new digital services, a number of traditional tools will remain relevant. The persistence of the cash economy in emerging markets means that complex distribution networks will continue to be crucial for digital services to interface with physical lives. In a business that relies deeply on trust, the role of longstanding brands and the understanding of local context will also remain integral to reaching people outside of the formal system. The policy and regulatory environment will play a determinant role in establishing incentives and setting national ambitions. As regulators confront questions around data protection, business models, and more, the policy end game of greater inclusion must remain at the fore. Providers able to effectively inform and support this process will be more likely to thrive.

Granryd added, “In an increasingly turbulent world, mobile money is also providing a lifeline, with digital humanitarian cash transfers and affordable international remittances giving refugees safe and convenient ways to meet pressing needs. We are also continuing to focus on narrowing the gender gap in access to financial services through programmes such as the Connected Women Commitment initiative.”

The 2018 State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money, as well as further information on the GSMA’s Mobile Money Programme, is available at: www.gsma.com/mobilemoney.

Note to editors:

The State of the Industry Report on Mobile Money draws on the results of the annual GSMA Global Adoption Survey of Mobile Financial Services and data from the GSMA Mobile Money Deployment Tracker, and provides insights on mobile money performance from the GSMA’s engagement with the industry.

Global Brands Launch Live RCS Business Messaging Services Based on the GSMA Universal Profile

Global Brands Including Booking.com, British Gas, ITV, Pizza Hut Delivery and Subway Launch Live RCS Business Messaging Services

BARCELONA, Spain-Wednesday, February 28th 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- The GSMA today announced that multiple global brands including 1-800 Contacts, 1-800-Flowers.com, Booking.com, ITV, Snaptravel and Subway have launched live trials of RCS Business Messaging based on the GSMA’s Universal Profile for Advanced Messaging (UP). The service upgrades existing SMS business messaging to create a richer and more interactive experience for consumers, allowing them to engage directly with brands within the messaging platform via artificial intelligence and chatbots. There will be a number of live demonstrations showcased at the GSMA Innovation City at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.

“In the space of a year, operator RCS launches have almost doubled from 30 to 55, underpinned by the Universal Profile, and have the potential to double again in 2018. Networks are now being interconnected in Europe and the Americas and we are seeing a rapidly growing base of global users,” said Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer, GSMA. “RCS Business Messaging is also being adopted by leading global brands who see the opportunities it presents to engage with consumers in a more interactive and compelling way.”

In the U.S., Google is collaborating with Sprint to enable campaigns with 1-800-Contacts, 1-800-Flowers.com, Booking.com, Express, SnapTravel and Subway in collaboration with messaging partners 3C, CM.com, Mobivity, OpenMarket, Smooch and Twilio launching through Google's Early Access programme. Also in Mexico where they will launch soon, Google is partnering with Telcel to enable campaigns with 5 Piso, Banamex, Broxel, DHL Mexico and Secretaria de Salud in collaboration with messaging partners Airmovil, Auronix, Aldeamo, Movile and Tiaxa. Vodafone, the first mobile operator to commercially launch RCS in 14 countries, is working closely with ITV and OpenMarket to see how RCS can be used to help interact with their viewers. They along with Google are also closely working with IMImobile on Barclays, British Gas, Foxtons and Pizza Hut Delivery. ADVA, BT and Mavenir Collaborate on Cloud RAN Technologies as Part of Telecom Infra Project

The companies will be exploring the benefits of Cloud RAN and Fronthaul transport in the UK TIP Community Lab

RICHARDSON, Texas & BARCELONA, Spain-Tuesday, February 27th 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- ADVA, BT and Mavenir have announced that they will be collaborating on a number of research projects at the UK’s Telecom Infra Project (TIP) Community Lab based at the BT Labs in Adastral Park, Ipswich.

TIP is an engineering-focused initiative driven by operators, suppliers, developers, integrators, and startups, aimed at challenging the traditional methods used for the deployment of network infrastructure.

At the BT Labs, ADVA, BT and Mavenir will be testing and validating the benefits of Cloud RAN (vRAN) using non-ideal infrastructure for fronthaul, to try and promote innovation in future mobile network deployments. The approach is to investigate and test solutions that will dynamically reduce the cost of future network deployment by reconsidering fronthaul technologies that have previously been rejected.

Today, the fronthaul between the BaseBand Control Unit (BBU) and the Remote Radio Unit (RRU) typically utilizes a fibre optic based transmission medium incorporating a proprietary CPRI (Common Public Radio Interface) specification. This interface has restricted innovation and excluded low-cost deployment technologies such as Ethernet or point-to-point microwave. For many parts of the world where fibre is too costly or difficult to obtain, operators are unable to deploy vRAN technology. The project aims to change the status quo by evaluating fronthaul interfaces that use only one tenth of the current bandwidth and support high latencies, thereby enabling the use of copper Ethernet connections or point-to-point microwaves.

The initiative has reached the testing phase with the deployment of an end-to-end vRAN system incorporating Mavenir and ADVA technologies.

“It’s great to be collaborating with a number of partners at our dedicated TIP Lab in Adastral Park. The results of our research so far into Cloud RAN and fronthaul demonstrate that an Ethernet medium using CAT 5 Connectivity uses one tenth of the bandwidth when compared to a CPRI interface,” said Richard MacKenzie, Principal Researcher, BT.

“This project will also demonstrate the ability to mix RRU suppliers connected to the Mavenir virtual BBU supported on COTs white box platforms. Through this testing and mix of suppliers, we are demonstrating that we can truly disrupt the current ecosystem.”

“We are excited about the challenges presented by TIP and are pleased to support these activities as we continue to deploy Open Interface Cloud RAN in other TIP Community Labs,” said John Baker, SVP Access Business Development at Mavenir. “Cloud RAN can save the carrier greater than 37% in both OPEX and Capex using non-fibre optic solutions.”

“At ADVA, we firmly believe that the virtualization of the RAN is one of the critical building blocks in creating tomorrow’s mobile networks. That’s why we’re so focused on helping to drive TIP’s vRAN Fronthaul project forward,” said James Buchanan, General Manager at ADVA’s Ensemble Division. “Within this project, we’re using our Ensemble Connector to show how simple it is to host vRANs on white boxes. In fact, we’re showcasing the solution this month on our booth at Mobile World Congress, Barcelona. What we’re demonstrating in Barcelona is the first step on the path to vRAN commercialization. What follows next is to clearly define the underlying requirements of the transport and Carrier Ethernet network, including synchronization and OAM – something we’re working on closely with BT, Mavenir and our other TIP vRAN Fronthaul Project Group partners.”

GSMA Expands Big Data for Social Good Initiative, Announces Successful First Wave of Trials

Additional Operators to Support New Phase of Mobile Big Data Programme

BARCELONA, Spain-Tuesday, February 27th 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)--The GSMA has achieved significant progress in the first trials of its Big Data for Social Good initiative by Bharti Airtel, Telefónica and Telenor, creating a blueprint for future deployments that leverages mobile operators’ big data capabilities to address the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The GSMA also announced at Mobile World Congress today that six operators – KDDI, MegaFon, NTT DOCOMO, SoftBank, Telefónica and Turkcell – will work on a new phase of the initiative focused on disaster preparedness that builds on the foundation established over the past year.

The GSMA’s Big Data for Social Good initiative was launched in February 2017 and is today backed by 20 mobile operators1 with a presence in 124 markets around the world. The initiative has enabled mobile operators to jointly establish a holistic framework and approach to analysing the data captured on operators’ networks to help public agencies and NGOs tackle epidemics, natural disasters and environmental crises.

“Over the last 12 months, the Big Data for Social Good initiative has generated significant momentum among operators and UN agency partners,” commented Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA. “We have equipped operators with a comprehensive blueprint of best practice guidelines for big data deployments. This approach has been tested and validated via several real-world trials around the world and supported by an advisory panel that has provided input from across the ecosystem.

“We are now expanding the initiative into the area of disaster preparedness, where we can harness the power of big data to understand, prepare for and reduce the effects of disasters on vulnerable populations.”

The Big Data for Social Good initiative is supported by an advisory panel consisting of global agencies and partners, including Data 2X, DIAL, GPSDD, Be He@lthy Be Mobile, OCHA, UN Global Pulse, UNDP, UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP and, most recently, the World Bank.

First Wave of Trials Showcasing Big Data Capabilities

Big Data for Social Good is currently being trialled by Bharti Airtel in India; by Telefónica in Brazil; and by Telenor Group in Bangladesh, Myanmar and Thailand. In these trials, operators are capturing anonymised, aggregated mobile indicators in a consistent output format, whilst respecting and protecting the privacy of individuals via an agreed Code of Conduct. The data is then combined with a wide variety of other data types to provide vital insights for public officials and NGOs.

In India, Bharti Airtel and the GSMA are working with Be He@lthy, Be Mobile (a joint initiative of the WHO and the ITU) to identify whether insights from mobile data can support national health systems. The trial is looking at how population volume and movement patterns can improve planning to control tuberculosis (TB), one of the biggest killers in India. In the trial, mobile data is providing detailed, up-to-date behavioural insights across a population of 280 million people, delivering a combination of scale and granularity that is unattainable from any other data source. The trial is identifying potential hotspots at higher risk of TB, which could help target interventions such as vaccination programmes, tobacco cessation initiatives, awareness campaigns or the deployment of mobile clinics.

Telefónica Brazil is using mobile network big data to monitor air pollution in São Paulo, Brazil’s largest city, and help improve the city’s traffic management and environmental planning. Using mobility data, it has been possible to predict pollution problems up to two days before they occur, allowing the city to take precautions to protect public health, such as guiding traffic via alternative routes and advising vulnerable populations, such as those with respiratory conditions, on areas of high pollution. The mobility data used in the trial also delivered greater granularity and wider reach than traditional fixed air quality and traffic sensors, which are expensive to deploy.

Following Telenor's successful collaboration with Harvard TH Chan School of Public Health that addressed the spreading of dengue fever in Pakistan, Telenor, Harvard, and MORU (the Mahidol Oxford Tropical Medicine Research Unit, Bangkok) are now addressing the critical issue of Multi-Drug-Resistant (MDR) Malaria, which is spreading in Asia. In 2017, preparatory work for studies on the spreading of MDR Malaria in a contiguous, three-nation area (Thailand, Bangladesh and Myanmar), was conducted.

Expanding the Initiative to Focus on Disaster Preparedness

The results of the trials to date, combined with mobile operators’ own initiatives, are providing the basis for the next wave of Big Data for Social Good deployments in 2018, which will focus on disaster preparedness in key countries including Chile, Colombia, Japan, Russia and Turkey.

In disaster-prone zones, mobile operators can access location and usage information in near real time, enabling relief agencies to identify zones at risk and direct resources efficiently. In Japan, for example, mobile operators are working with the Disaster Management Bureau Cabinet Office at the Government of Japan to allow rescue teams to act quickly and prioritise the deployment of resources in the event of a large-scale disaster. In Latin America, Telefónica has an alliance with the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) to develop a better assessment of which regions and populations are most vulnerable to natural disasters linked to the effects of climate change to help authorities design prevention plans accordingly.

“The use of mobile big data capabilities for disaster preparedness situations is a key example of how the mobile industry is contributing to the SDGs,” added Granryd. “The work to date demonstrates that by combining mobility data with other data sources, operators can build a business case to support decision-making and planning by governments and NGOs across a wide variety of use cases.”

Demonstrations of the operator Big Data for Social Good trials can be seen during Mobile World Congress at the GSMA Innovation City, located in Hall 4, Stands 4A30, 4A5 and 4A15 in Fira Gran Via.

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Tallix, a luxury accessories brand, today proudly announces the launch of its first product line, fashionable filtration masks that can protect the wearer from air pollution, flus and airborne diseases. Experienced entrepreneur Giancarlo Tallarico, the son of a Rodeo Drive luxury jewelry family, serves as the founder and CEO of Tallix.

“On Rodeo Drive, I have seen immaculately dressed couples decked out in the finest brands while wearing unattractive disposable face masks,” says Tallarico. “When a dear Japanese-American friend of mine returned home from Japan with the flu because she felt silly wearing a face mask as an American, I knew I was onto something. I set out to create a face mask that would be enjoyable and elegant to wear.”

With 20 designs for women and 13 designs for men, the Tallix face masks feature the finest fabrics sourced from Paris. The same luxurious silks, twills, satin, lace and trims used by the world’s leading fashion brands are now available in medical-grade masks that filter against PM2.5 and other harmful particulates.

“The health benefits of Tallix masks are three-fold,” says Tallarico. “Our masks block incoming pollutants and particulates, block your outgoing cough and flu symptoms from those around you, and lastly block you from touching your own nose and mouth when you are out in public places during flu season.”

The Tallix brand has selected the finest, breathable fabrics to not only provide unrivaled style in their face masks, but to also increase comfort for the wearer. Additionally, disposable filtration liners constructed out of meltblown fabric can be purchased from the company’s website and replaced as needed.

Initially, the masks and filtration liners are only available on Tallix’s ecommerce site, with plans for distribution in major metropolitan cities in the coming year. The brand plans to release further styles in the spring and fall seasons to continually innovate using on-trend colors and fabrics.

The scale of response required in these situations is placing increasing pressure on the humanitarian sector to find new approaches and partnerships to meet these challenges. However, there is optimism that digital solutions and the ubiquity and continued growth of mobile technology will enable more efficient, effective and dignified aid. This is underscored by the fact that, by 2025, there will be 9 billion mobile connections globally, with 75 per cent of connections being on a smartphone.

Access to mobile connectivity can have a transformative impact on the way humanitarian assistance is delivered and can help empower crisis-affected populations through access to information, services and connection to families. The new M4H programme will unite mobile operators, the private and public sectors and the humanitarian community to progress the development of a digital humanitarian future.

The programme will help foster innovative solutions and build partnerships in areas such as digital identity, mobile money, mobile-enabled energy, climate resilience and food security. It will also provide innovation funding to partnerships that demonstrate the impact of digital solutions in humanitarian contexts. The programme is managed by DFID’s Research and Evidence Division and implemented by the GSMA Mobile for Development Foundation.

Granryd concluded, “We have spent the past few researching and working to highlight and demonstrate the opportunities and impact of mobile solutions in humanitarian contexts, including through our Humanitarian Connectivity Charter. Individuals impacted by humanitarian crises are among the most vulnerable in the world. Mobile connectivity can be a lifeline. Together, DFID and the GSMA will expand on this work and undertake collaborative research, facilitate partnerships and support innovations that address the needs of crisis-affected people. Through M4H, the private and public sectors are giving dignity and empowerment to these people and helping them overcome barriers to accessing technology because of displacement, poverty and humanitarian crisis.”

GSMA RCS Messaging Initiative Takes off as Multiple Global Operators Interconnect Networks

Leading Operators Interconnect RCS Networks Across 17 Markets Worldwide; RCS Gaining Momentum With Over 159 Million Monthly Users

LONDON-Tuesday, February 27th 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE)--The GSMA today announced that mobile operators América Móvil, Rogers Communications and Sprint have interconnected their networks across the Americas, while Deutsche Telekom, Telenor Group, Telia Company and Vodafone Group have interconnected in Europe, enabling subscribers in these regions to access advanced Rich Communications Services (RCS) across 22 networks in 17 countries1. The upgraded service will enable users to enjoy enhanced messaging services such as chat, group chat and file share amongst many others.

Initial interconnection was achieved using the Jibe RCS Hub from Google, as well as a direct interconnect between Vodafone and Deutsche Telekom in Germany. In parallel, leading operators including Bell Canada, China Mobile, Deutsche Telekom and T-Mobile US are working on a joint initiative together with Samsung and Syniverse to accelerate the open ecosystem of RCS Interconnection Hubs. Efforts like this initiative to promote an open interconnected RCS ecosystem are also supported by AT&T and Swisscom. Interconnection Hubs will be fundamental for the rapid user adoption of RCS.

“In the space of a year we have aligned the industry behind a single, interoperable profile, which has resulted in a significant number of operator launches and a rapidly growing monthly user base. Now we are seeing operators further demonstrate their support for RCS by interconnecting their networks in a connect-once-to-all manner, which will dramatically increase the number of contacts a subscriber can enjoy RCS messaging with,” said Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer, GSMA. “We are also moving quickly towards RCS business messaging, a new area offering the opportunity for brands to engage directly with their customers in a more interactive way. This is an exciting time for the global RCS community and we look forward to seeing more launches and interconnections in the near future.”

Interconnection of additional operators and hub providers is expected to follow and the number of network interconnections forecast to exceed 140 by the end of March 2018. Momentum for RCS is growing around the world with over 159 million current active monthly users, and the potential for continued growth is also significant with GSMA Intelligence estimating that, by Q4 2018, there will be 350 million users.

“As operator roll-outs of advanced Messaging (RCS) gather pace around the world, interconnecting the networks of launched operators becomes a key success metric,” said Dr. Petja Heimbach of Deutsche Telekom Group and Chair of the GSMA’s IP Comms Group. “Having a number of interconnect hubs, which are themselves interconnected, is the fastest way to accelerate the establishment of global RCS interconnect. We are hoping to see first commercially available offers in the second half of 2018.”

The GSMA Universal Profile for Advanced Messaging

The GSMA’s Universal Profile (UP) provides an open, consistent and global messaging service across networks and devices. It simplifies interoperability and enables OEMs and OS providers to achieve scale and give consumers a richer and more consistent messaging experience regardless of device or network. UP is currently backed by over 70 leading operators, vendors and OS providers worldwide. Philippines based, Globe Telecom also became one of the first operators to launch RCS in the Asia Pacific region this month.

UP 2.0 upgrades the service further by enabling Application-to-Person RCS Business messaging and RCS-capable chatbots, as well as additional messaging expressiveness features. It introduces ‘conversational commerce’ that will enable users to interact with brands within the platform. It is an important step that when combined with network interoperability enables operators to offer a consistent and engaging messaging experience. Two-Thirds of Mobile Connections Running on 4G/5G Networks by 2025, Finds New GSMA Study

Mobile Ecosystem Generated $3.6 Trillion in Economic Value in 2017 as Industry Prepares for 5G Era

BARCELONA, Spain-Tuesday, February 27th 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Two-thirds of the world’s mobile connections will be running on 4G and 5G networks by 2025, according to the new 2018 edition of the GSMA’s ‘Mobile Economy’ report, published today at Mobile World Congress. It is forecast that 4G will account for 53 per cent of global mobile connections1 by 2025 (up from 29 per cent in 2017), while 5G networks will grow to account for a further 14 per cent, following the launch of the first commercial 5G networks this year. The report also measures the growth of the Internet of Things (IoT) over this period and the mobile industry’s increasing role in contributing to economic growth and social development.

“We are at the dawn of a new era in mobile with the imminent launch of the first 5G networks and the Internet of Things poised to further transform the way we live and work,” said Mats Granryd, Director General of the GSMA. “Meanwhile, operators continue to expand and upgrade their 4G networks in order to provide an evolutionary path into the 5G era, and also evolve their offerings to unlock new revenue streams in areas such as e-commerce, content, lifestyle, advertising and marketing, and identity and security.

“As the mobile industry moves into the 5G era, the need for pro-investment, pro-innovation policies and modernised regulatory regimes has never been greater,” Granryd added. “Streamlined regulation and further policy developments in three main areas – spectrum, infrastructure and economics – are key to realising the full potential of 5G for consumers, society and industry.”

Growth in 4G, 5G and the Internet of Things

In under a decade since the first commercial 4G networks were launched, 4G is on track to become the world’s leading mobile network technology by next year and to account for more than half (53 per cent) of global connections by 2025. During this period, operators will also be investing in new 5G networks; beginning this year, the first wave of 5G launches will occur in North America and major markets across Asia and Europe. 5G connections are forecast to reach 1.2 billion by 2025, accounting for 14 per cent of the total connections at that time.

Meanwhile, growth in the IoT will be driven by a proliferation of uses cases for smart homes, cities, buildings and enterprises. GSMA Intelligence forecasts that the number of IoT connections (cellular2 and non-cellular) will increase more than threefold between 2017 and 2025, reaching 25 billion. To date, 23 mobile operators have commercially launched 41 Mobile IoT networks worldwide across using the NB-IoT and LTE-M standards.

The mobile industry signed up its 5 billionth unique mobile subscriber3 last year and is forecast to add almost another billion by 2025, reaching 5.9 billion subscribers – equivalent to 71 per cent of the world’s expected population by that point. Subscriber growth over this period will be driven by developing countries, particularly Bangladesh, China, India, Indonesia and Pakistan, as well as markets across Sub-Saharan Africa and Latin America. Further, by 2025, it is expected that 5 billion subscribers will be using their mobile phones to access the internet, up from 3.3 billion in 2017.

A Growing Contributor to the Economy and Social Development

The mobile ecosystem accounted for 4.5 per cent of global GDP globally in 2017, a contribution equivalent to $3.6 trillion in economic value added4. This contribution is forecast to reach $4.6 trillion, or 5 per cent of GDP, by 2022 as countries around the globe increasingly benefit from the improvements in productivity and efficiency brought about by increased take-up of mobile services and M2M/IoT solutions. In 2017, the wider mobile ecosystem also supported 29 million jobs (directly and indirectly) and made a substantial contribution to the funding of the public sector; almost $500 billion was raised through general taxation, plus a further $25 billion via mobile spectrum auctions.

The report highlights that, in addition to contributing to economic growth, mobile technology is increasingly being used to address the challenges of access, cost and quality of service in key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, utilities, education and financial services. Following the mobile industry’s commitment to helping deliver the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) two years ago5, the report notes that the industry is making an important contribution across all 17 SDGs as a result of three key trends: better networks, greater connectivity and increased use of mobile-enabled services.

“Two years into the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the mobile industry is increasing its impact across all 17 SDGs as a result of wider mobile reach and better networks,” added Granryd. “There is also growing adoption of mobile-based tools and solutions that aim to spur the digitisation of systems, processes and interactions across a number of industries, especially in low- and middle- income countries.”

GSMA Mobile Connect Roll-Out Continues across the Globe

Operators in China and South Korea Latest to Deploy Authentication Service;

Market Opportunity for Mobile Connect Services to Reach US $75 Billion by 2022

BARCELONA, Spain-Tuesday, February 27th 2018 [ AETOS Wire ]

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- At Mobile World Congress today, the GSMA announced that mobile network operators (MNOs) in China and South Korea are among the latest to deploy Mobile Connect to provide identity and authentication services to their customers. China Mobile’s identity service, Mobile Authentication, offers a range of authentication capabilities, enabling 76 million users per day in the Chinese market. In South Korea, LGU+ has added the Mobile Connect API to their already successful identity service; with the addition of LGU+, Mobile Connect is now offered by all MNOs in the country and available to more than 44 million mobile subscribers.

“We are seeing the number of operators offering safe and secure digital identity services to their customers rapidly expanding,” said Alex Sinclair, Chief Technology Officer, GSMA. “Across the globe, mobile operators are fulfilling an important role in the digital identity space, giving users control over their own data and enabling consumers, businesses and governments to interact and access online services in a convenient, private, and trusted environment, regardless of geographical borders.”

The GSMA’s Mobile Connect solution enables customers to create and manage a digital universal identity, across multiple online services, via a single login. The service simply and securely authenticates users, enabling them to confirm their identity and their credentials to access mobile and digital services. Mobile Connect works by employing the user’s unique mobile number, combined with a unique PIN for more secure use cases, to verify the user’s identity, authorise transactions and grant online access.

Growing Global Momentum

Mobile Connect is being deployed at a rate of one new operator every month, an increase in operator coverage of around 26 per cent deployment growth year-on-year and is viewed as a trusted solution for secure, consumer-centric digital identity services. In both Brazil and Taiwan, all operators have recently launched interoperable services, and in Russia, four operators – Beeline, MegaFon, MTS and Tele2 – are collaborating in a live pilot with the aim of full commercial service availability in 2018. Orange is currently testing, along with Ariadnext, a new service called ‘Mobile Connect et moi’ which makes government services available to Orange users on the France Connect portal via their mobile devices. The requirement for digital commerce to ensure secure, consumer-centric digital identity services, combined with the increasing focus on mobile to deliver government services, is driving momentum and creating future growth opportunities.

Global Market Opportunity for Mobile Connect to Reach $75 Billion

Around the world, traditional methods of accessing online services via usernames and passwords is reaching the end of its life, so there is a clear opportunity here for operators and industry partners to offer mobile identity services. Research by GSMA Intelligence indicates that the global market opportunity for Mobile Connect to provide authentication, authorisation, identity and attribute services will be approximately US $75 billion by 2022, with a further opportunity to enable cross-border authentication, authorisation and identity services via eIDAS valued at an additional US $2.5 billion in the same timeframe.
