(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Boehringer Ingelheim today announces the ten-year anniversary of the RE-LY® trial publication1-3 recognising the contribution made in the decade since by patients, healthcare professionals (HCPs) and researchers.

In the fifty years prior, warfarin had been the standard of care for stroke prevention in atrial fibrillation (SPAF). While effective, warfarin has a number of known interactions, meaning patients require careful monitoring, and the warfarin dose being adjusted accordingly. The pivotal RE-LY® trial investigated the efficacy and safety in stroke prevention of dabigatran compared to warfarin in 18,113 atrial fibrillation (AF) patients. It marked the first time that a non-vitamin K antagonist oral anticoagulant (NOAC), that has since been brought to market, was shown to be at least as effective and safer than warfarin in stroke prevention in a randomised setting.1-3 This represented the first puzzle piece in the growing knowledge base around NOACs as an alternative therapy option to vitamin K antagonists (VKAs) for SPAF.

About Stroke Prevention in Atrial Fibrillation (SPAF)

AF is the most common sustained heart rhythm condition.7 It can lead to a five-fold increase in the risk of ischaemic stroke for the 33.5 million people living with AF around the world.8,9 15 million people worldwide suffer a stroke each year. One–third of these people die as a consequence.10

The RE-LY® trial, which was published in the New England Journal of Medicine in September 2009, compared dabigatran to warfarin for preventing stroke in patients with AF.1-3 In the RE-LY® trial, 18,113 patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation and a risk of stroke were investigated, using a PROBE (prospective, randomised, open label with blinded endpoint evaluation) design to assess the safety and efficacy of dabigatran 150mg or 110mg twice daily vs. dose-adjusted warfarin.11

Trial results demonstrated that dabigatran had notable advantages over warfarin even when warfarin is well controlled.1-3 Compared to warfarin:

Dabigatran 150mg twice daily was superior for the prevention of stroke / SE and significantly reduced the risk of both ischaemic and haemorrhagic stroke1-3,11
Rates of the primary outcome were 1.12% per year in the group that received 150mg of dabigatran (relative risk, 0.65; 95% CI, 0.52 to 0.81; P<0.001)
Rates of the primary outcome were 1.72% per year in the warfarin group, as compared with 1.54% per year in the group that received 110 mg of dabigatran (relative risk with dabigatran, 0.89; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.73 to 1.09; P=0.89) 1-3,12
Dabigatran significantly reduced the risk of intracranial haemorrhage (ICH), along with significant reductions in the risk of both life threatening and total bleeding1-3,12
The rate of major bleeding was 3.61% per year in the warfarin group, as compared with 2.92% per year in the group receiving 110 mg of dabigatran (P=0.003)1-3,12
The rate of major bleeding was 3.40% per year in the group receiving 150 mg of dabigatran (P=0.41)

IGI Reports Rising GWP and Growth in Key Lines of Business in Half-Year 2019 Results

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- International General Insurance Holdings Limited today reported earnings for the first half of 2019.

IGI reported a net profit of $13.75 million for the first six months of 2019, compared to $11.02 million last year, and a 12.2% rise in gross written premiums from $165.87 million in June 2018 to $186.12 million in June 2019.

The Group recorded an overall underwriting profit of $25.88 million for the six months ending 30 June 2019, which reflected a 9% increase from the 2018 result of $23.75 million.

IGI reported growth in most major lines of business, with Casualty, Engineering, Ports & Terminals and Financial Lines contributing the most in dollar growth.

Annualized return on equity for the period ended 30 June 2019 came in at 8.7%, compared to 7.2% for the same time period in 2018. IGI’s book value per share has grown to $2.358 at the end of June 2019 from $2.271 at the end of 2018.

Meanwhile, IGI reported an investment income result of $7.3 million for the first half of 2019, compared to $4.88 million for the first half of 2018.

IGI posted a combined ratio of 92.84%, compared to 91.28% in June 2018.

Sumitomo SHI FW Wins Contract for CFB Boiler in Taiwan.

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Sumitomo SHI FW (SFW) announces today that it has been awarded a contract by Cheng Loong Corporation, CLC for a CFB steam generator for their Chupei Mill in Taiwan. Commercial operation of the new boiler is scheduled for July 2021.

SFW will design and supply the 19 MWe CFB steam generator and auxiliary equipment and also provide technical advisory services for erection and commissioning. The CFB will be designed to burn paper mill rejects as primary fuel and paper mill sludges and coal as secondary fuels. This is the second CFB that SFW has supplied to CLC. In 2012, Sumitomo Heavy Industries (SHI), as a licensee of SFW, delivered a 35 MWe CFB boiler firing coal and tire derived fuel for CLC’s Houli Mill.

Study Investigates the Utility of Masimo ORi™, Oxygen Reserve Index, to Reduce Hyperoxia in Critically Ill Patients

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Masimo (NASDAQ: MASI) announced today that in a randomized controlled study involving 150 ICU patients recently published as a letter in Intensive Care Medicine, researchers investigated whether monitoring with Masimo ORi™ (Oxygen Reserve Index) could reduce the time critically ill patients spend with moderate hyperoxia, compared to monitoring with oxygen saturation (SpO2) alone.1 ORi is an index of oxygenation in the moderate hyperoxic region, defined as arterial partial pressure of oxygen, PaO2, in the range of 100 to 200 mmHg). As an “index” with a scale between 0.0 and 1.0, ORi can be trended to notify clinicians of changes in a patient’s oxygen reserve.

Dr. Sigismond Lasocki and colleagues at the Centre Hospitalier Universitaire of Angers, France (CHU Angers), sought to evaluate whether controlling the fraction of inspired oxygen (FiO2) in mechanically ventilated patients based on monitoring with ORi, rather than with SpO2 alone, could reduce the time patients spend in a moderately hyperoxic state (PaO2 ≥ 100 mmHg). 150 critically ill adult patients, all of whom were mechanically ventilated for at least 2 days, were divided randomly into an ORi and a control group. ORi and SpO2 were measured using the Masimo Root® Patient Monitoring and Connectivity Platform and rainbow® sensors. In the ORi group, nurses were instructed to decrease FiO2 when ORi ≥ 0.01. In the control (SpO2 only) group, they were instructed to decrease FiO2 when SpO2 ≥ a prescribed upper limit. PaO2 was measured by analyzing arterial blood gasses.

Data from 75 patients in the ORi group and 71 patients in the control group were analyzed. The researchers found that monitoring with ORi allowed a statistically significant reduction in the percentage of days patients spent with hyperoxia without a statistically significant increase in hypoxia: 14% were hyperoxic (0 to 33%) in the ORi group vs. 33% (11 to 56%) in the control group (p = 0.003). The percentage of hours spent with hyperoxia was also “much lower” using ORi: 7.4% were hyperoxic (0 – 24.8%) in the ORi group vs. 17.3% (3.8 – 43.1%) in the control group for PaO2 ≥ 100 mmHg (p = 0.0069), and 0% (0 – 7.2%) in the ORi group vs. 5.6% (0 – 18.1%) in the control group for PaO2 ≥ 120 mmHg (p = 0.0037).

The researchers concluded that “The use of ORi monitoring to titrate oxygen rates allowed an important reduction of the time spent with hyperoxia compared with the use of SpO2 alone, probably because nurses are reluctant to decrease oxygen rates when SpO2 is in a normal range. A nurse-driven protocol to adjust FiO2 according to SpO2 was already in place in our unit, explaining why the percentage of time with hyperoxia we observed in the control group was much less than usually reported (30 vs 60%). This strategy to decrease oxygen rate according to ORi (which detects high PaO2) may thus be even more efficient in units where there is no protocol to adjust oxygen rates. SpO2 could remain a warning for hypoxia and ORi for hyperoxia. Larger studies are needed to evaluate the clinical benefit of this strategy.”

ORi has not received FDA 510(k) clearance and is not available for sale in the United States.

32 Leading Global Fashion and Textile Companies Make Commitments on Climate, Biodiversity and Oceans

(BUSINESS WIRE)-- Ahead of the G7 meeting at Biarritz from August 24-26, French President Emmanuel Macron, accompanied by Economy and Finance Minister Bruno Le Maire, Minister of Labour Muriel Pénicaud, and Deputy Minister of Ecological and Solidary Transition Brune Poirson, has invited to the Elysée Palace representatives of the 32 fashion and textile companies who have launched the Fashion Pact by his side.

In April 2019, ahead of the G7 meeting, Emmanuel Macron had given François-Henri Pinault, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Kering  (Paris:KER), a mission to bring together the leading players in fashion and textile, with the aim of setting practical objectives for reducing the environmental impact of their industry.

In a historic move, given the scale and importance of the coalition that has been created, 32 leading companies from the fashion and textile industry have given themselves a set of shared objectives in the form of a Fashion Pact. The coalition includes groups and brands in Luxury, Fashion, Sports and Lifestyle, along with suppliers and retailers, all of whom are already involved in separate environmental strategies.
