UAE-Jordan Strategic Partnership in Government Modernization Launches One Million Jordanian Coders Initiative

The Jordanian capital Amman witnessed the launch of the One Million Jordanian Coders initiative under the patronage and in the presence of His Royal Highness Crown Prince Al Hussein bin Abdullah II as part of a strategic partnership in government modernization between the UAE and Jordan.

A high-level UAE delegation led by His Excellency Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, Minister of Cabinet Affairs and the Future, attended the launch.

One Million Jordanian Coders seeks to train young Jordanians in coding to enable them to keep pace with the rapid developments in computer science and increase their competitiveness in the job market. The initiative aims to equip them with the necessary tools to serve the future needs of the country, spearhead the development of its digital economy and bridge the existing digital gap in the Arab world to make Jordan one of the most advanced countries in coding.

The initiative is inspired by the One Million Arab Coders initiative, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, that aspires to contribute to restoring the Arab civilization to its former greatness, elevate the status of the region and enhance its competitiveness on the global stage. It also seeks to stimulate innovation in young people, invest in their capabilities and empower them to take on an active role in building a knowledge-based economy.

Managed by the Crown Prince Foundation, the One Million Jordanian Coders initiative, hosted in partnership with Microsoft, Udacity, Facebook and Bayt.com, includes the launch of an online platform that offers free training courses for young people in Jordan interested in developing their digital skills across different domains.

Creating a virtual home for a community of coding students, educators and experts, the platform features online coding courses that provide successful participants with accredited certificates, as well as e-forums for those interested in coding, and listings of available coding jobs for certified graduates. Students who excel in the courses can also receive scholarships for internationally recognized training programs.

At a later stage, the initiative will provide an opportunity for exceptional graduates to become world-class software developers through free advanced six-month training courses. Graduates will receive a globally accredited coding certificate.

PRI replaced its previous system with ExaGrid and Veeam after its IT staff spent too much time troubleshooting backup issues. Al Villani, PRI’s senior system administrator said, “Veritas NetBackup wasn’t set up to send us any kind of alerts if there was an issue, so we had to log in and look through it, which was a lot of manual work. It is clear, however, that despite the well-known health risks associated with smoking, many people continue to smoke and will do so in the near future. The World Health Organization (WHO) predicts that there will be more than 1 billion people who smoke in 2025, about the same number as today. While the best choice would be to quit, many people who smoke don’t.

Medical examinations reveal child’s diarrhoea to be actually chronic constipation

 One of the 10 conditions for parents to seek medical attention, constipation among children is rising and is particularly affecting their self esteem

Reem visited Emirates Hospital - Jumeirah (EHJ) – an Emirates Healthcare company and an internationally recognised 100-bed beacon of progress in the region’s healthcare system after her 4-year-old son, Rayan complained of what she believed was diarrhoea. She sought medical attention after she realised something was wrong especially because Rayan was periodically releasing small quantities of loose stools.

On evaluation by Dr Sripradha Sudarsanam, a Specialist Paediatrician at EHJ, Rayan was diagnosed with chronic constipation.

“Many children who suffer from chronic constipation experience leaking of soft stools in their underwear which poses a big problem in their social and emotional dimensions. Because of the unconscious leaks, the children are almost always smelly and are being neglected and isolated in classroom by their peers. The leaky stools are the newly formed stool which trickles down through the hard stools stuck to the intestine. Sometimes vigorous pushing due to urge to defecate can cause a tear in the anal region and cause bleeding as well,” explained Dr Sudarsanam.

According to studies, 30 percent of children are affected by constipation at some point in their lives. When not adequately treated, chronic constipation can lead to haemorrhoids, anal fissures, bowel bleeding and faecal incontinence.

“Children who are improperly toilet-trained and lack fibre intake in their diet often complain of chronic constipation. Parents should ensure that children avoid processed food and eat food rich in fibre, such as fruits and whole grains. They must also monitor their child’s fluid intake and ensure that they drink between 1 to 1.5 litres of water each day,” said Dr Sudarsanam.

Constipation is a vicious cycle, and seeking medical attention at the right time can help avoid further complications in children while also helping their emotional and mental health from deteriorating.

Under this multi-year agreement, 60 analogue turned digital channels will be broadcast with brighter, sharper picture and better sound, via the SES-4 satellite at 22 degrees West.

SES will be using the comprehensive coverage of SES-4 to ensure high service availability of bandwidth and to broadcast all channels via the Digital Terrestrial Television (DTT) infrastructure across Ivory Coast. These digital channels will then be available to all Ivorian television (TV) viewers who have a digital set-top box or an integrated digital TV with a built-in DTT decoder.

In addition to using SES-4 to accelerate the digital switchover, the capacity leased on SES-4 for digital broadcasting will also be used to broadcast Radiodiffusion Télévision Ivoirienne (RTI), the state's public TV network, to fulfill its public service mission of providing local news and information to Ivorians.

Stanford Seed Partners with Entrepreneurs in Africa and India to Catalyze Economic Growth

(BUSINESS WIRE) -- Frank Omondi is a wildlife biologist turned entrepreneur. His desire to lead a business that makes a positive impact on the community led him to become the managing director of Ten Senses Africa, a fair trade cashew and macadamia nut processing company based in Nairobi, Kenya.

With a background in wildlife biology, Omondi realized he needed further training to help him continue to drive the company forward. That realization led him to join the Stanford Seed Transformation Program in 2016.

Stanford Seed is a one-year certificate program delivered by Stanford University through Stanford Graduate School of Business (GSB) that operates in East Africa, Southern Africa, West Africa, and India. The program, which is designed exclusively for busy business owners and CEOs, provides management training, one-on-one support, and networking opportunities to growth-minded business leaders.

Following Omondi’s participation in the program, Ten Senses Africa doubled its sales, now provides 1 million cashew seedlings to support 30,000 local farmers, and employs 600 people, two-thirds of whom are single mothers. The company was able to expand to Tanzania with the support of the Seed Transformation Network, a group composed of past participants in the program.

“The program created a lot of trust between the participants,” said Omondi. “It is difficult to know anyone in Tanzania if you are based in another African country. Through the program, we were able to learn what other people were doing in those countries, which enabled us to have entry.”

Surveys of past participants of the Seed Transformation Program reveal the impact participants and their organizations have on their communities. After completing the program, 89 percent of participants grew their customers, 72 percent introduced a new product or service, 64 percent increased their revenue, and 50 percent expanded into new geographies.
